Miami Heat 92, Chicago Bulls 88
With both teams coming into the nightcap with identical 1-1 records through two games of this summer league, the Miami Heat pulled away late to capture the 92-88 victory. In strict contrast to the day’s two earlier games, which were both decided by double-digit points, this game was tight from the beginning to the end.
Chicago threw the first round of blows, leading 26-22 after the first quarter and holding that lead with a 45-44 edge heading into the locker room at the break. The third quarter remained true to form, as both teams traded runs and at the end of the third, the Heat found themselves up by one, with the score 63-62. Less than two minutes into the fourth, the Heat had opened up a five-point lead with the score 69-64 at the first timeout break of the final frame. To stick to the script, the Bulls came roaring back and the score was tied at 81 with less than two minutes to go. However, after that, the Bulls never could get back to within reach as the Heat closed out the game. After averaging 25.5 points through the first two games, Earl Barron once again led the Heat, scorching the Bulls for 26 points and four rebounds. His aggressive play was displayed by his 17 free throw attempts, where he connected for 16 points. Dorell Wright also had another strong performance, scoring 20 points, almost five points more than his average coming into the game, while also chipping in eight assists and eight rebounds. Tyrus Thomas continued to impress, contributing 19 points and 12 rebounds for his second double-double in the loss. This game was one of the more entertaining games of the week, as it contained its share of highlight reel dunks. At 3:14 to go until halftime, Vincent Grier, from the University of Minnesota, had the dunk of the week, with a one-handed high-flying jam, while also getting fouled to complete a three-point play. Then, midway through the third quarter, Barron went high with a one-handed tomahawk dunk over three would-be Chicago defenders. Both dunks brought the crowd in attendance to their feet. - Jason Wallace |
