2007 Pepsi Pro Summer League - ORL vs. MIA

MIAMI HEAT 63, ORLANDO MAGIC 57

In the last game for each team in this year’s Pepsi Pro Summer League, the Miami Heat defeated the Orlando Magic by a score of 63-57 at the RDV Sportsplex in Orlando, FL early Friday afternoon. The six-point victory concluded the summer session with the Heat holding a 2-3 record and the Magic with a 3-2 mark.

The contest was tight throughout, with the Magic holding a 15-13 lead after the first quarter, before they extended their lead in a strong second quarter. Behind the precise shooting of J.J. Redick in the first half, they increased that two-point lead at the end of one, to an eight-point lead at 34-26 at the half. Redick was the story of the first half, leading all scorers with 15 on 5-of-9 (55.6%) shooting from the floor.

Coming out of the locker room, the nets cooled down quite a bit on both sides of the floor. By the time the first timeout was called at the 7:09 mark of the third quarter, both teams had failed to score a point and the score remained 34-26. Orlando’s Steven Smith put-back a minute later pushed the Magic advantage to double digits, and it took until the 4:24 mark in the third quarter for the Heat to score their first point of the second half. The third period ended with both teams scoring 11 points in the quarter.

The Heat came out for the fourth quarter and started to chip away at the Magic’s lead to bring it to 54-51 on an Orien Greene free throw. Orlando’s Kevin Kruger then came down on the ensuing possession an hit a big three from the corner, extending the lead back to 57-51. The Heat pulled it even, at 57-57, on a hook shot by John Edwards and the Magic were forced to call a timeout after seeing their lead disappear. The Heat then played some solid defense, locking down the Magic to end the game with a 12-0 run and the 63-57 victory.

Daequan Cook continued to struggle for the victorious Heat, scoring five points on 1-for-8 (12.5%) shooting from the floor. John Edwards paced the Heat with 14 points and four rebounds. The Magic’s James Augustine finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Redick failed to score a second half point and finished with 15 points.
