Marcus Williams was the star of the New Jersey Nets for the second consecutive day, leading the squad to their first victory at the 2007 Pepsi Pro Summer League over the Miami Heat, 73-65. Williams, who tallied 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists last night in the Nets’ loss to the Magic, picked up right where he left off, scoring 28 points, dishing out five assists and pulling in six rebounds during the opening game of day two at the RDV Sportsplex in Orlando, Fla.
The Nets broke open the contest in the final period, opening the 4th on a 10-1 run to push the score in favor of New Jersey, 61-48. Miami was never out of the contest, however, pulling as close as four, 65-61, on a free throw from Orien Greene with 2:01 left in the game. Baskets by Sean Williams and Robert Hite pushed the advantage back to seven, 69-62, and two charity shots from Williams sealed the victory for the visiting team. Over the last 2:59 of the game, Miami managed to put only four points on the scoreboard, including the free throw from Greene and a 3-pointer from Daequan Cook with 28.3 left on the clock.
Williams did most of his damage in the second half, scoring 18 of his 28 after halftime, including 10 in the 4th alone. Hite also had another good game for the Nets, pouring in 13 points and eight boards.
Miami, who shot only 29.3 percent from the field for the game, was led by Chris Quinn. The point guard connected on 6-of-15 shots, finishing the game with 23 points and three assists. The Heat also got beat on the glass, with 28 rebounds compared to New Jersey’s 40.
