Magic Photographer Earns Special Honor

ORLANDO -- Longtime Orlando Magic team photographer, Fernando Medina, was recently recognized by Sports Illustrated in its 100 Greatest Sports Photos of All Time for his iconic image of Michael Jordan’s last shot of his Bulls’ career. Medina’s Jordan photo was tabbed number one by SI out of the 100 Greatest Sports Photos of All Time. The image was captured during the 1998 NBA Finals when the Chicago Bulls topped the Utah Jazz to win the title.

“I am honored and very humbled by this recognition. To me, it represents what this country is all about,” said Medina. “Who could foresee that a poor refugee from Cuba would end up with the opportunity of photographing Michael Jordan taking his last shot as a Bull to win the 1998 NBA Finals, and make good on that opportunity! Amazing. To think of all the great photographers and their great photographs through time and history, I find it hard to believe that God blessed me with the image chosen as Sports Illustrated‘s favorite, so far. Thank you very much to those at SI who liked my work enough to bestow it with such an incredible honor.”

Medina has been associated with the Magic since franchise inception in 1989. Entering his 23rd year with the team, Medina was assigned as official team photographer in 1996. He spent the first seven seasons as part of the team’s photography department.

During his work with the Magic, Medina served as team photographer for the now defunct International Hockey League’s Orlando Solar Bears from 1995 thru their final championship season in 2001. He now serves as team photographer for the new East Coast Hockey League franchise, the Orlando Solar Bears, who began play in 2012. He has worked as a contributing photographer for NBA Photos, Getty Images, WireImage, Reuters and US Presswire photographing NFL, MLB, NCAA basketball and football games, as well as NASCAR and Grand-AM auto racing events.

His work has been published worldwide by Sports Illustrated, ESPN, SLAM, Hoops, Beckett, Bravo Sport, Dunkshoot, and Forbes, on numerous websites and in hard cover books, as well as in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, The Sporting News, and
