Magic Dancers: Recapping Trip to Spain

October 3, 2012

ORLANDO -- It was another successful and enjoyable trip to Europe for the Orlando Magic Dancers.

Over the course of the last nine seasons the Dancers have visited 19 different countries in their travels abroad for Military tours and NBA events. This particular voyage took the girls to Bilbao, Spain for an NBA 3X Tournament.

Over a five-day span, several of Orlando's finest entertainers traveled to Europe to perform dance routines, posed for photos, signed autographs, and much more as part of NBA 3X.

Read about the journey from Team Manager Jeanine Klem-Thomas and Dancers Ashley, Victoria, Shalize, Laine, Krystle and Team Leader Kendra as they respond to a few questions about the trip, check out "By the Numbers" and watch video clips from the adventure.

1) What were your general thoughts of the entire trip and the Spanish culture?

RESPONSE

Klem-Thomas
Hola! What an AWESOME time we had in Spain once we finally arrived! At each of our shows we were welcomed warmly with open arms and unbelievable enthusiasm by the NBA Spain fans! I really enjoyed learning more about the Spanish culture (we really need to start Siesta here in the U.S.), eating authentic Spanish cuisine (I never knew an ox steak was so delicious), and having the opportunity to make some new friends! A sincere THANK YOU to everyone we met along the way including our hotel staff, our driver, NBA 3X event spectators and participants, event sponsors, and NBA staff for treating us like family!

Ashley

What an amazing experience! Bilbao, Spain was beautiful! It was the cleanest and prettiest place I have ever seen! The food was amazing too!

Kendra

Wow! What a whirlwind of a trip! Despite the travel mishaps that occured along the way, the short time we did get to spend in this breathtaking city was well worth it. Strolling along the streets of Bilbao was like being on the set of a movie because the city was such perfection. The buildings are built with such amazing detail and historical character. The people are so gracious, kind, and warm hearted. Dogs do not walk on leashes, children are extremely well behaved, and everything in the city all the way down to the trash cans is pristine. I really love the pride of the city of Bilbao. It is because of this pride that the city remains so well taken care of and well kept. They display their symbol in the tiles on the sidewalks, the street posts, and it just exudes from their hearts. I love the sense of family, community, and love between all of the people in the city. Of course I also love the long lunches, siesta, and late nights. The focus on time with the family always makes my heart smile. I think it is so important to enjoy life with the ones you love and really live life. There is no one that does this better than the Spaniards! Sometimes we often get carried away in work, school, and our daily lives to take time out for ourselves, friends, and family. I hope to adopt this sense of family into my own daily life.

Bilbao was one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited. I loved how welcoming the NBA fans were to all of us! It was so amazing I didn't want to go home! One thing I was sure to bring back home with me was Siesta!

For my first time overseas, Bilbao was the perfect place to visit! And when I say perfect, I mean perfect. The city was so beautiful! The architecture was amazing and so clean. I loved every moment of walking around and taking in the culture and the incredible surroundings. The fans at NBA 3X were so excited and it absolutely made the trip complete. I couldn't have asked for a better place for my first international trip and enjoyed spending it with my teammates!

Krystle

Spain was absolutely beautiful! I love how free spirited everyone is there and  how much time they put into preparing these long lunches and dinners each night with their families. The architecture was so stunning making each building beautiful to look at. It was great to be able to experience their Spanish culture which opened my eyes to many different styles and foods.  Bilbao is such a beautiful city full of life and spirit. I had such an amazing time there and wouldn't mind going back!!

WOW! Bilbao Spain was absolutely breathtaking! From the buildings, parks, people, and simply just the feel of the entire city; it was absolutely amazing. My best way of describing it was feeling like I was walking inside of a picture. Any chance I had I tried to live in the moment and really embrace my surroundings. The people of Bilbao were a joy to be around, the fans we were able to meet and chat with at the NBA 3x event were great and so excited to have us there. The event was tied together so nicely right in the heart of Bilbao along side a river with beautiful mountains and buildings in the background. I was also able to work on my Spanish speaking skills, which actually turned out to be a lot better then I thought under pressure. Although we ran into a few flight delays and comedic travel issues on the way there, it was truly an unforgettable trip and amazing experience. I miss it already, I hope to one day travel to Spain again!

2) What was your most memorable moment from the trip that you won't forget?

RESPONSE

Klem-Thomas

For me one of the most memorable moments was when NBA Player Eric Gordon’s Manager jumped in the dance contest.  He might be one of the funniest people I’ve ever met and boy does he have some funny dance moves!

Ashley

The most memorable moment of the trip would be performing at the NBA 3x Tournament. The location was right on the water with the most amazing views. As we were performing I just kept thinking to myself how beautiful it was here and it didn't seem real!

Kendra

My most memorable moment was walking around the city at night with everything closed, and just enjoying the company of my teammates and our surroundings. We had no sense of time, no stress about anything, and we were just taking it all in!  It was peaceful, mysterious, beautiful, serene, and we all were embracing the community we were a part of for a short time!

Victoria

My most memorable moment would be our last performance of the trip. We got the loudest applause ever and a standing ovation.

Laine

My favorite moment of the trip was when my teammates and I walked around Bilbao Sunday night when everything was closed. We felt like we were the only ones in the city and had so much fun roaming around and taking photos. It was a night I will never forget!

Krystle

The most memorable moment I have, aside from exploring their beautiful city, was performing and getting to know the fans at the NBA 3X tournament, especially the children!! They were all so sweet and excited for us to be there and I enjoyed every minute of getting to know them!

Shalize
Hmm. Most memorable..Although there were SO many memorable moments along this roller coaster of trip. My favorite night was Sunday night the night before we left. In Bilbao everything is pretty much closed on Sundays, the rest of the girls and I went to dinner at a cute restaurant, and ventured out through the city to see what we could discover. All we ended up finding was a salsa dancing place which was fun, but the rest of the night we spent walking through parks, swinging on swings, taking pictures by cool statues and flower beds and walking through different streets seeing all we could find. It was great being able to spend that time with my teammates in such a beautiful place where all we had was the company of each other and the beautiful sights.

3) What was one thing you learned from this adventure?

RESPONSE

Klem-Thomas

It’s not something I’ve learned just on this adventure, but really it’s something I’m reminded of every time we travel overseas…Dance is a Universal language just like a smile!

Ashley

This adventure has sparked an interest to travel and see more of Spain. I plan on making a trip back next summer and want to see more!

Kendra

One thing I learned while on this adventure was that people really do live each day like it was their last.  It is difficult being engrossed in the American lifestyle and actually putting this saying into reality.  However, I learned it is possible and I hope to instill these Spanish values into my daily routine!

Victoria

That moment of applause from the fans taught me how no matter where you are, there's always someone to create a magical moment for. And I am grateful to the fans of Bilbao Spain for allowing us to entertain them.

Laine

I learned some Spanish on the trip because I was rooming with Shalize! I also learned that I have a great desire to continue to travel. It was such a great experience that its made me want more! I will definitely return to the city of Bilbao at some point in my life.

Krystle

One thing I learned while on this adventure was that there are so many places that I want to see and travel to. Getting to experience Spain was an eye opener for me to explore what else there is out there around the world!

Shalize

One thing I learned on this adventure was that I am even more curious to see what else the world has to offer. I'm now extremely curious about other cultures and languages. I always knew I would love traveling when I got the chance too. Having been to the Philippines and now Spain with the NBA, traveling to those places have been my most favorite experiences ever. I look forward to hopefully filling my passport up with more cool stamps!
