Magic Dancers: Preparing For Trip to Spain

September 10, 2012

ORLANDO -- After three successful trips overseas during the 2011-12 season to the Philippines, Rome, and China, the Orlando Magic Dancers have been invited by the NBA to Europe for another event.

This time, however, the dancers will participate in a 3X Tournament in Bilbao, Spain.

Making the journey this Thursday, September 13 through Monday, September 17 with Dance Team Manager Jeanine Klem-Thomas are Dancers Ashley, Victoria, Shalize, Laine, Krystle and Team Leader Kendra!

Over the course of five days, the Magic Dancers will perform dance routines, pose for photos, sign autographs, appear at various partner hospitality functions, media events and much more.

Klem-Thomas and her team was recently asked a few questions regarding their preparation for this trip. Check out their responses and also watch video highlights of the dancers rehearsing two of their routines that they will perform in Spain.

1) What are your general thoughts of this upcoming trip?

RESPONSE

Klem-Thomas
Hola Magic fans! This will be the Magic Dancers 2nd time to Spain, but our first time to Bilbao! On our last visit we were in Madrid in 2010 right in the middle of the World Cup, talk about exciting! But I have no doubt this trip will be equally as memorable and I’m really looking forward to visiting this particular area as I’ve heard it’s absolutely gorgeous…also quite excited for sightseeing, shopping and of course meeting all the amazing NBA and Magic fans throughout Spain during our appearances! I’m also looking forward to spending some quality time with the Dancers traveling on this adventure with me - Kendra, Ashley, Victoria, Shalize, Laine & Krystle!

Ashley
I cannot believe we are going to Spain! Spain is literally #1 on my list of places I want to see so it is a dream come true! It doesn't seem real yet! I love traveling and going to new places so I am so excited to see the country, their culture, and all of the people we will meet!

Kendra

I am ecstatic about another travel opportunity, and absolutely thrilled to go to Spain!  I adore this country, and studied there for a year and a half when I was in school.  I have always longed to return, and I couldnt be luckier than to get a chance to do so with the best travel companions in the world!  I have never been to Bilbao and look forward to experiencing a new part of this country, and being able to brush up on my Spanish and dive into some tapas and paella... Oh How I've missed you!  I know there are some wonderful sights to enjoy in Basque country, but most of all I look forward to the family driven culture and an afternoon siesta :)

Victoria
I am looking forward to the new experience we will all have in Spain!!!!! I think that we are all very fortunate and honored that the NBA granted us another opportunity to do what we do best. I am also excited to travel there to reach out and give a memorable experience to those current and soon to be Orlando Magic fans in Spain! Maybe I can get a little lesson in the Flamenco while I'm there ;-)

Laine
I am more than excited to be given the opportunity to go to Spain with my teammates! I've never been on an international flight before and this will be my first trip out of the country, besides the Bahamas. Words can't even begin to express how happy and lucky I am. I am very blessed to work for such an amazing organization and am grateful everyday for the opportunities the Orlando Magic has given me.

Krystle
Wow, Spain!! I can't even begin to describe how incredibly excited I am! I have always dreamt of traveling abroad and to have this amazing opportunity to travel overseas with my lovely teammates is a total blessing! I can't wait to experience their Spanish culture, meet new people and perform our routines!! I've never been on a flight longer than 3 hours so traveling for more than that will be interesting, but I'm up for the challenge.

Goodbye Orlando, Hola España :)

Shalize
When I think of Spain I immediately imagine gorgeous scenery! Although I was extremely excited about traveling to Taiwan, hearing that NBA 3x was relocated to Spain was quite the treat! I'm so thankful to have this opportunity and share experiencing this wonderful place with the rest of the girls! I'm looking forward to strengthening my Spanish speaking skills, meeting the people of Spain, performing at events and maybe on some downtime we'll get to watch some bull fighting?  I just know we're going to have a blast!
ESPANA, AQUI VENIMOS!

2) What are the essentials that you will need to pack in your carry-on luggage?

RESPONSE

Klem-Thomas
I never travel without my pillow, travel blanket (that thing has been around the world and back numerous times), snacks and a family photo! My carry-on is usually also loaded with Dancer autograph cards and event giveaways, you just never know when you’re going to run into a Magic fan in the airport or on the plane!

Ashley
Some essentials to pack in my carry-on include lots of snacks, my tooth brush, pillow, ipod, kindle, hand sanitizer, and of course my Orlando Magic Snuggie!

Kendra
Carry on essentials will most likely include hand sanitizer, something to knock me out, and several things to entertain  such as a coloring book, some solid reading material, and I may even get crazy and try and get studying done.  I will bring a blanket for sure because it is usually colder than Antarctica :) oh and I mustn't forget the most important item of all... Food.  I will have plenty of snacks I keep me full and happy :)

Victoria
Essentials that I usually pack in my carry-on, besides the emergency costume pieces are pretty basic. The first thing on the list would be my Snuggie (I never travel without it), neck pillow, some freshen up stuff, some snacks, and a little Dream water to help me sleep.

Laine
The essentials for my carry on include my camera, my iTouch, playing cards, my big LBHS sweatshirt (shout out!), Wintergreen Life Saver mints, headphones, pillow and blanket, Dream Water, a good book and schoolwork.

Krystle
Some essentials that I will pack in my carry on include my iPod, books, pillow and blanket, gum, magazines, toothbrush, snacks, make-up and most importantly my camera to take pictures of this amazing journey!

Shalize
Carry on essentials will definitely be snacks, a pillow, music, and lip gloss.  I also love working on crossword puzzles and I'm going to start reading the Hunger Games series for this trip!

3) How do you plan to entertain yourself during the trip?

RESPONSE

Klem-Thomas
This particular trip I’ll be bringing some work since pre-season begins just 3 weeks after our return! But aside from that, it’s been a very busy stretch leading up to our departure, so I’m predicting a lot of SLEEPING for me on this particular travel day and hopefully catching up on some movies too! Watch out España, aquí hemos llegado!

Ashley
I definitely plan to take something that will knock me out and get some sleep. I'll be with five of my teammates and our coach Jeanine so I'm sure we will be able to keep each other entertained!

Kendra
Besides coloring, reading, and a little movie watching, I know the main source of entertainment will be the hilarious antics of my teammates :). They are always there to provide the most stellar form of entertainment :)

Victoria
To keep myself entertained throughout the trip, I usually have a few books to read, games, and music, probably some of our routine music so I can review the dance in my chair :)

Laine
I plan on entertaining myself for this trip by mostly playing Patty Cake with Shalize. When not doing that, I plan to sleep, read The Art of Racing in the Rain, watch the Notebook and Overboard (newly downloaded), and listen to music.

Krystle
I definitely plan to catch up on my reading, get some school work and studying done, watch movies, relax and try to get some sleep so that I'm not completely jet lagged. I also look forward to spending time with my teammates and enjoying their company :)

Shalize
Hmm. I'll be getting a lot of Sleep. Of course! As well as listening to music and reading. Lets see if I can get through the entire Hunger Games series. If I get really bored I'll just rely on one of the other girls to entertain me. :)
