OrlandoMagic.com's Josh Cohen assesses the five best duos during this recent winning streak. Click through this gallery for details.
Elfrid Payton and Dewayne Dedmon
These two have connected on several jaw-dropping alley-oop slams over the last three games. In fact, Payton assisted Dedmon for a layup or dunk eight times during this stretch. Dedmon is a very good screener and he excels when he rolls to the basket, while Payton’s hesitation dribbles and herky-jerky movements tend to throw defenders off.
Victor Oladipo and Nikola Vucevic
These two were sensational in the pick-and-pop during the Magic’s win over the Pacers on Thursday. Oladipo’s explosive first step forced Vucevic’s defender to meet Vic in the paint quite often, which allowed Nikola enough space to catch and shoot. Oladipo, who is underrated as a passer and playmaker, assisted four of Vucevic’s 12 made shots.
Brandon Jennings and Andrew Nicholson
These two have quietly developed good chemistry with one another. In fact, Jennings assisted Nicholson eight times over the past three games. Perhaps most impressive about Jennings has been his adjustment as a facilitator as opposed to a primary scorer. There was one play during the Magic’s win over the Pacers in which Jennings cut into the lane and made a no-hesitation, no-look feed to Nicholson, who slammed it home and drew the foul.
Elfrid Payton and Aaron Gordon
These two are supreme when they run together in transition. Both prefer it when the game is sped up and they execute well on the fast break. Perhaps the most sensational dunk of the year came in this fashion in the Magic’s victory over the Nets when a Payton steal led to a Gordon jam from the free throw line.
Victor Oladipo and Evan Fournier
The best word to describe the Magic during this recent stretch is “unselfish” and that’s because they have been constantly making the extra pass as the ball flies around the perimeter. Oladipo and Fournier are perhaps most to credit for this as each has passed up on semi-good shots for even better shots. These two connected five times in the last two games.
