ROLE WITH TEAM: O’Quinn spent much of his summer in Orlando working to get stronger and in better shape so that he could make a big jump this season. The Magic are hoping that O’Quinn’s familiarity with the NBA and his teammates will help him play more instinctively this season.

PRESEASON EXPECTATIONS: O’Quinn knows that he has to stay within himself and do the things that he does well such as defending, rebounding, setting screens and talking on pick-and-rolls. He showed some promise offensively late last season by passing well from the high post and knocking down the occasional midrange jump shot. But O’Quinn knows that he is going to secure his spot on the roster by doing the dirty work that others tend to shy away from.

STATUS: O’Quinn is a favorite among the Magic coaching staff because of his workman effort and his infectious enthusiasm. If O’Quinn can be more physical on the low block, boost his rebounding numbers and just be functional offensively, he can earn minutes as Nikola Vucevic’s backup at center. But if O’Quinn struggles, Maxiell could take his minutes and knock him out of the rotation.
