Much has been made already of Oladipo attempting to make the switch from college shooting guard to NBA point guard. He’ll do just that this season while learning some of the finer points of the position from veteran Jameer Nelson. But he’ll also be at shooting guard splitting time with Arron Afflalo, one of the Magic’s best mentor types at offering advice about basketball and life. Harkless credits Afflalo with helping him understand the game last season when he was a 19-year-old rookie.
As he attempts to make the transition to point guard Oladipo will have another resource to go to in Vaughn, who know a thing or two about running the point. During his 12-year NBA career, Vaughn played point guard with John Stockton in Utah, with Jason Kidd in New Jersey and with Tony Parker in San Antonio. Oladipo said he likes the way that Vaughn is both demanding and reassuring in practice and he has no hesitation in going to his head coach to talk through scenarios or watch film about playing the point guard position.
``(Vaughn) played a long time in the league at a position that I’m trying to learn. He’s definitely going to be helpful for me,’’ Oladipo said. ``I’m just happy that he’s my coach. I’ll ask him for advice and he’ll give me advice.’’
