However, the Magic’s feel-good night ended once again in frustrating fashion when James drilled an 18-foot jump shot over Arron Afflalo’s outstretched arm with 15 seconds to play. The shot – not far from where James won a game against the Magic last season with a last-second layup – lifted the Heat to a 101-99 defeat of Orlando at American Airlines Arena.

The Magic (4-8) had two chances to force overtime, but couldn’t convert. Afflalo had a runner in the lane come up short with three seconds to play. Rookie Victor Oladipo missed a 10-footer from the baseline just before the horn, ending Orlando’s chances for what would have been a storybook night.

``I saw the lane open on the right and (Dwyane Wade) did a good job of recovering,’’ Afflalo said. ``When I spun I guess a lot guys just came. I thought I had a pretty good look at a floater, but the rim disappeared and I couldn’t even see it. I thought I could throw up a soft shot that would bounce around the rim and I didn’t even see if it grazed the rim or not.’’
