Denton: Jones Earns Roster Spot

``My mom isn’t able to travel so much, but now that I’m right here locally, like 30 minutes away, she gets a chance to come to the games with my grandparents and sister,’’ Jones said. ``(Magic owner) Mr. (Rich) DeVos talked to us about family and being a family-oriented team and that means a lot to me because that’s the type of person I am, building a family at home and then having a family here on the court and in the locker room. So this means a lot to me.’’

Jones made the Magic when non-roster invitees Mickell Gladness, Kris Joseph, Manny Harris and Romero Osby were waived Friday night following the preseason finale. The 6-foot 10, 235-pound forward averaged just 4.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.29 steals a game in the preseason, but the Magic like him because of his professionalism, the veteran intangibles that he adds and his ability to play center or power forward.

``When we were talking to Solomon before training camp we told him that he had a legitimate chance to make the team if he came in and focused on X, Y and Z, and to his credit he did that,’’ said Hennigan, referring to Jones’ ability to rebound, defend and be a veteran presence in the locker room. ``In our view he earned this opportunity and we want to make sure that we reward merit and Solomon certain came in and worked his butt off and earned a spot.’’
