Knowing that Davis would likely miss time in the regular season, Orlando GM Rob Hennigan signed free-agent power forward Jason Maxiell away from Detroit in July. Also, veteran power forward Solomon Jones has shown himself to be a solid option in the preseason and has a chance of making the Opening Night roster.

``You can see that (Jones) is a pretty live body, so we wanted to bring someone in who would test our bigs’ ability to play against an athletic, wiry, engaging athlete. So it’s been good to see our guys go against (Jones),’’ Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. ``(Jones) is a guy who has been in this league and has been on various teams and knows how hard it is to stay in this league.’’

Privately, Davis wonders if he can get back to being the player that he was last season following two procedures on his foot. A team captain last season for the first time in his career, Davis said he is better prepared now mentally to handle his time away from basketball. And he said he’s grown mentally and has gotten himself better physically – attributes that should make him a better this season.
