Magic Dancers: Preparing For Trip to China

November 1, 2011

ORLANDO -- After a successful trip to the Philippines for NBA Madness Manila 2011, the Orlando Magic Dancers have been invited back to Asia for another tour.

This time, however, the dancers will participate in an event spread across China as part of Guangdong mobile.

Making the journey this Thursday, Nov. 3 with Dance Team Manager Jeanine Klem-Thomas are Dancers Kendra, Virgilia, Jessica, Katie, Casey and Team Leader Tara!

Over the course of 12 days, the Magic Dancers will perform dance routines, pose for photos, sign autographs, appear at various partner hospitality functions, media events and much more at different cities in China, including Dongguan, Shenzhen and Kumming.

Klem-Thomas and her team was recently asked a few questions regarding their preparation for this trip. Check out their responses and also watch video highlights of the dancers rehearsing five of their routines that they will perform in China.

Check back as Coach Jeanine and the Dancers provide updates during their time overseas!

1) What are your general thoughts of this upcoming trip?

RESPONSE

Klem-Thomas
Ni hao Magic fans (just brushing up on my Chinese)! Well I must be honest in saying I never dreamt we would be heading to China for a 5th time much less this quickly after our trip to the Philippines last month, but what an absolute honor it is to visit 3 more cities we haven’t been to yet! I’m really looking forward to learning more about this region in China, sightseeing, market shopping and of course meeting all the amazing NBA and Magic fans throughout Shenzhen, Kunming and Dongguan during our appearances! I’m also extremely excited to spend some quality time with the Dancers traveling on this adventure with me - Tara, Virgilia, Kendra, Jessica, Katie and Casey!

Tara
I am looking forward to our upcoming trip to China!. This will be my third time traveling to China with the Magic dancers. Luckily we will be in different cities than where we have been previously, and we will have some time to do some sightseeing, and.... Shopping, duh!!!

Kendra
Wow! I can not believe we are going back to Asia after only being home for just a month. This is incredible! I am so excited about the upcoming trip and I am looking forward to all the wonderful new experiences that we will be embarking on. I am thrilled to be able to visit China with with this fantastic ladies by my side that never cease to provide a constant source of entertainment. With two rookies coming with us it will be a great chance for us to bond closer as a team, and I am very much looking forward to that.

Virgilia
I'm extremely excited and grateful to be traveling back to China for a 3rd time! Having the opportunity to experience a culture that's so much different to ours, is a treat in it's own :o)

Jessica
I am so thrilled to be able to return to China! I went on an NBA trip with the Magic last year as my first trip ever out of the country, and had an incredible time performing and teaching some talented Chinese dancers with my teammates. Getting to experience the culture, food, shopping, and museums with such welcoming hosts was unforgettable. I feel so fortunate to be able to return a year later, and look forward to all of the new experiences and memories that this trip will bring!

Katie
I am beyond excited to go to China with the Orlando Magic Dancers! Going to Dongguan, Shenzhen, and Kunming for the Dongguan Mobile events is going to be such an amazing experience. I've been to Beijing once before and I'm really looking forward to seeing what these places are like! I feel so lucky to be able to go to China but the fact that it's with my teammates while representing the Magic takes it to a whole other level! I'm so excited to perform for the people there and experience the culture. It's going go be an amazing trip!

Casey
I am so excited to visit China! This has been one place that I have dreamt of visiting for a long time! I am so intrigued by their culture and interesting traditions, I can't wait to be immersed in it! As a rookie this year I feel so privileged to be part of this trip with such talented girls! I know we will do our best to represent the Magic and the NBA in the most positive way.

2) What are the essentials that you will need to pack in your carry-on luggage?

RESPONSE

Klem-Thomas
I never travel without my pillow, travel blanket (that thing has been around the world and back), snacks and a family photo! My carry-on is usually also loaded with Dancer autograph cards and event giveaways, you just never know when you’re going to run into a Magic fan in the airport or on the plane!

Tara
In my carry-on I always pack lots of snacks, because airplane food is pretty sketchy, and I am normally asleep when they come around with the food cart :) I also pack a change of clothes, some magazines, and of course some crafty stuff to satisfy my creative side.

Kendra
Well, I learned quickly that my hair and Asia do not really cooperate very well. With the different voltages, the humidity, etc. my hair was seriously throwing a tantrum in the Phillipines. Therefore it is essential that I bring some serious hair conditioner and extra appliances( hair dryer, curling iron) because all of them tend to blow out! The Phillipines also taught me the importance of packing my entire under garment drawer. On the last trip my stock was running quite low and it was on the verge of a tragedy! Besides that, just lots of protein bars (because my diet may consist of only rice and vegetables), vitamins, emergen-C (to prevent catching any plane germs), a camera to take in all the action, and a few good books.

Virgilia
The essentials that I'll be taking on the plane with me will be food, food, food, and my pig travel pillow! lol

Jessica
My carry on will be loaded with crossword puzzles, lots of snacks, a travel pillow and blanket, a toothbrush, gum, my iPhone (for music, of course!), and a few costume essentials just in case any main luggage gets lost along the way!

Katie
I'll definitely pack my iPod, magazines, and a book. A few uniforms just in case our luggage doesn't make it! Some healthy snacks and my pillow. I'm hoping to sleep as long as possible on this flight!

Casey
I will definitely be bringing a small pillow, always need some make-up to touch up those sleep marks left on your face, and a hair brush is usually essential for my bed head from leaning against the window.

3) How do you plan to entertain yourself during the 24 hour trip?

RESPONSE

Klem-Thomas
It’s a very busy stretch leading up to our departure, so I’m gonna have to say there will be a lot of SLEEPING for me on this particular travel day! Watch out China, here we come.

Tara
During the 24 hour trip, I plan on entertaining myself by getting to know my new teammates!!! There are a few rookies taking the trip with us, and since we haven't spent too much time together yet this season, I am going to take the opportunity to learn about my new friends.

Kendra
So about that 24 hours... I don't think there is any way to really prepare yourself for that long haul. So I will just make sure to dress comfortably in layers, bring a blanket and pillow, pack a bag full of goodies, reading materials, coloring utensils, movies, music and anything else to distract myself from the throbbing in my lower limbs! I will definitely try to be very sleep deprived in order to try and sleep the majority of the way, but the best form of entertainment will be my fellow teammates sleep deprived and delirious. Thanks ladies you never let me down.

Virgilia
I plan to catch up on the hundreds of hours of SLEEP that I haven't received because of how hard I've been working these past couple of months and I'll probably sneak in a movie here and there :o)

Jessica
After making the 24 hour journey once before, I know just how long it actually feels! I plan on entertaining myself by doing some reading, several crossword puzzles/wordsearches, catching up on movies, listening to music, and of course, chatting with my lovely teammates.

Katie
I'm not afraid of flying but I am extremely claustrophobic. So I have some anxiety about being on a plane for that long! I am going to try not to sleep the night before and hopefully with the help of Tylenol PM I'll be sleeping for most of the flight. If that plan doesn't work I'll probably read and chat with my teammates!

Casey
I plan on sleeping A LOT! :) Also starting a book I've been wanting to read for awhile.
