Howard, Magic Help Build Playground
February 8, 2005
Orlando Magic gave an assist to JetBlue Airways in partnership with KaBOOM! and the local community of Central Florida by helping to build a playground at the Boca Club Apartments in Orlando. The playground was built in one day by more than 175 volunteers from JetBlue, Orlando Magic, the Boys & Girls Club, Washington Mutual, and members of the local community.
Orlando Magic forward Dwight Howard, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, Stuff the Magic Mascot and Orlando Magic employees were among the volunteers assisting with the project.
The new state of the art playground features a purple, red and blue colored racer slide, spiral climber, adventure bridge and swings for the children of more than 200 families in the central Florida community who currently have no place to play. The playground design was chosen based on input from the children who drew their dream playgrounds for planners at a Design Day in December.
The Orlando Magic is committed to the community. Over the last 16 years, more than $12 million has been distributed to local non-profit organizations via the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation. Annually, Orlando Magic community relations efforts impact 75,000 kids. Ticket highlights for 2005-06 include: 7,313 seats priced $31 or under per game, 2,166 seats priced $15 or under per game and tickets as low as $38 per game in the lower bowl. For ticket information log on to orlandomagic.com or call 407-89-MAGIC.
Through NBA CARES, the league, players and teams will raise and contribute $100 million for charity, donate more than 1 million hours of hands-on volunteer service to communities worldwide, and build more than 100 places where kids can learn and play over the next five years.
JetBlue is committed to partnering with local organizations within the Orlando area to show its appreciation for the support the community has provided to the low-fare airline. In April 2005, JetBlue opened its LiveTV hangar and in June 2005 opened its JetBlue University, Orlando Support Campus. JetBlue operates daily flights from Orlando International Airport to New York and Boston and new service to Puerto Rico will begin in May.
