Cohen’s Analysis: He never really became a free agent as planned. Prior to meeting with teams that were coveting him in 2010, Gay decided to accept a five-year, $82 million extension to stay in Memphis. There were at least five teams at the time that were very interested in him.
On one hand, Gay helped the Grizzlies crawl out of the gutter. Though he did endure injury problems that forced him to miss Memphis’ playoff run in 2011, in which it eliminated San Antonio as a No. 8 seed, Gay was one of the leaders on a suddenly surging franchise.
However, it became clear a couple of years later that despite his freakish athleticism and scoring aptitude, there was something missing with Gay and the Grizzlies decided to trade him last season to the Raptors.
Obviously, Toronto felt similarly and most recently sent him packing again. Gay is now trying to resurrect his career in Sacramento.
