Cohen’s Analysis: It’s not Phoenix’s fault. In fact, it had to do it. The Suns knew it would have been too taxing to pay a high first round draft pick when they were on the verge of signing Steve Nash to a mega contract in 2004. So appropriately, Phoenix traded Deng’s draft rights to Chicago for pretty much nothing (second round draft pick and future conditional pick).

Nash would become league MVP in back-to-back years and he would help the Suns reach the conference finals twice. It would have been nice, though, if they could have found a way to keep Deng and team him up with Nash, Amar’e Stoudemire, Shawn Marion and Joe Johnson.
