WHY FOR BROOKLYN?

Cohen’s Analysis: To my surprise – though Brook Lopez’ season-ending injury was unpredictable – Brooklyn’s experiment failed miserably. Sure, it can salvage the season by winning a dreadful division, but regardless, the Nets have no chance of capturing a title this year.

Therefore, it would be in their best interest to completely shatter the aging and unreliable nucleus of that team and try to accumulate draft picks to make up for all the selections they have already relinquished (as part of Joe Johnson and KG/Pierce deals).

This trade would not only accomplish that but it would also allow the Nets to shed salary (Deron Williams and Lopez’ contracts). And with Pau Gasol and Omer Asik on board, Brooklyn could still challenge for a playoff spot this season all while aiding its presently gloomy future.
