WHY FOR CAVALIERS?
Cohen’s Analysis: It’s no secret that Cleveland hopes LeBron James will return next summer when he can become a free agent. However, it’s probably a long shot, especially if Miami wins a third straight NBA title.
If Carmelo Anthony became available by the trade deadline, which would have been unimaginable prior to the start of this season, the Cavs may want to rock the cradle and shoot for the stars. Sure, it’s not a guarantee Melo – likely to be a FA next July – would re-sign, but uniting him with Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson may be enticing enough.
Surrendering an unprotected draft pick in 2014 may not haunt Cleveland if it can reach the playoffs this season.
