Lakers x Nike

Nike and the NBA have collaborated with the teams to unveil new editions of the uniforms. Each of the uniforms that the Lakers will wear this season will feature the Nike Swoosh and Wish. With this change, the traditional home and road jersey sets have been replaced by a new system where home teams can pick which of their uniforms will be worn at home games and visiting teams will choose a contrasting uniform within their own assortment.

Icon

The Icon edition is the primary color uniform that represents the unique identity and rich heritage of each of the 30 teams in the league, for which the Lakers have adopted their gold jerseys.

Nike Lore Series

Go into the intricate details for the design for the City Edition jersey designed by Kobe Bryant and Nike and the first of the Lore Series. Designer Ben Montoya of Nike takes you through the City Edition process.

The Black Mamba
Two numbers, five championships, and twenty seasons. Few players have ever earned what Kobe has – especially all in one town. That’s why the Lakers have gone their own route in creating the Lore Series as a spinoff of the City Edition jerseys to honor both their renowned franchise and those who have taken it there.

All For Tinsel Town
In a city of stars, the Lakers have walked amongst Hollywood’s best and brightest from the beginning. Coming to LA straight out of high school, no exception was made for Kobe, the silent assassin amongst them. “He always felt like when he put on the jersey and short, he carried the weight of the city behind him, “ Montoya says. “That’s one thing we wanted to make sure we echoed.”

“The first and last thing you see when the black mamba strikes is the black lining inside its mouth. That’s why we had to go black.”
– Ben Montoya

Where is All Began
After two decades on the court, the design team went all the way back to the beginning to bring out Kobe’s rookie look. From classic drop-shadowed numbers to red tape and a blacked out build, the jerseys throws back to number 8 with updates only 24 could claim – the coat of a silent assassin. “We felt like the best way to approach it was actually embossing a fabric,” says Montoya. “So as the players move down the court there’s gonna be that same sheen of a black mamba.”

Honoring LA
One of basketball’s best, the Lakers didn’t forget where they came from when crafting this special edition. While at first glance the 24 of shorts’ waistband appears to be Kobe’s number, a closer look reveals the letters “LA”, with respect to the entire team. “The Lakers have been able to create their own path in regards to the City Edition,” says Montoya. “You’re gonna see more of a progression with this, more in connection to their identity.”

New Nike Uniforms

The new Nike uniforms have been created using new NikeConnect technology. Each adult-sized Nike NBA Connected Jersey will have an embedded NFC (near field communication) chip that will launch real-time team and player content such as pregame arrival footage, highlight packages and top players’ favorite music playlists – all on the jersey owner’s mobile device. Throughout the season, a wealth of exclusive offers and experiences will bring fans closer to the game they love. Nike NBA Connected Jersey is available exclusively online starting September 29th.

The uniforms are comprised of recycled PET bottles, a combination of Alpha Yarns and recycled polyester (each uniform represents approximately 20 recycled bottles). This modernized, sweat-wicking, sustainable design has a vastly improved fit with altered construction and hemlines on the shoulder, along with the bottom of both the jersey and shorts allowing for a full range of motion.

The Nike Therma Flex Showtime Warm-up Jacket, the first on-court warm-up jacket with a performance hood. Celebrating the style of the game, Nike designers refreshed a beloved apparel staple into a new performance product for athletes on and off the court.
