2017 Exit Interviews: Metta World Peace

Metta World Peace was the Lakers’ elder statesman in his 17th NBA season, providing a veteran presence with a championship reputation. World Peace didn’t play much, appearing in only 25 games, though he did lead L.A. to its final win of the season by scoring 18 points against New Orleans on April 11.

Below is a summary of his exit interview with assembled media on Thursday:

On his future with the Lakers: They’re probably not gonna bring me back. … That’s what (President of Basketball Operations) Magic (Johnson) said. He’s probably not gonna bring me back. But it’s good. I had a nice time. … When I’m playing or doing anything, I just focus on what I’m doing at that time. And this year my focus was making sure I’m in shape and helping young guys.

On his reaction to the news that he will not be retained: To me, it didn’t really matter. … I had the opportunity to come in and play, and I took advantage of it.

On his career in general, if this was his last in the NBA: I feel like I had a great career. Had some big games. … I feel like I had a great time.

On why he thought this year was a success for the Lakers: I think the young guys developed. I saw progress. That’s all you can ask for. … I see progress with those guys.
