2012-13 Top 10 Moments: #4
Eight games under .500 in late January, the Lakers needed to win nearly every contest down the stretch in the final month of April to make the playoffs.
Their fate would come down to the last day of the 2012-13 regular season.
But prior to the Lakers' contest against the Rockets on April 17, Utah - previously neck-and-neck with L.A. - lost to Memphis, guaranteeing the Lakers a playoff berth. A loss would keep them in the No. 8 spot, while a win would push them up to the No. 7 seed, past Houston.
A desperation three-pointer from Houston’s Chandler Parsons forced overtime, but the Lakers overcame the absences of their starting backcourt – Steve Nash (back/hamstring/hip issues) and Kobe Bryant (torn Achilles tendon) – in the extra period, and rallied to win 99-95.
Leading the charge – and coming up huge for the purple and gold in the final weeks of the regular season – were Steve Blake and Pau Gasol. Blake played all 48 minutes, recording 24 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while drilling four triples for the third straight game. For Blake, this capped a final month where he converted on nearly 44 percent of his three-pointers. Gasol, meanwhile, recorded his second triple-double in the final three games of the regular season with 17 points, 20 rebounds and 11 assists.
