Camp Lakers Fun For All

Short and sweet was the verbiage on the cover of the 2009 Camp Lakers program, which detailed what the organization had to offer for its 10th season on the campus of the University of California-Santa Barbara:

16 Hall of Famers
15 NBA Championships
1 Camp

With two early-July sessions, Camp Lakers featured appearances by five different Lakers players - Shannon Brown, Jordan Farmar, D.J. Mbenga, Josh Powell and Sasha Vujacic - as young hoopsters went through basketball activities for five days and four nights.

"Camp Lakers was started to provide a unique experience for aspiring basketball players between the ages of 10-18," said Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak. "In addition to many of the Laker coaches, staff and players that appear at the camp many of the nation's top high school coaches work the camp's two sessions every year."

Josh Powell "I can speak for my teammates when I say that we had a great time helping out the camp's instructors, who really knew what they were doing," added Josh Powell. "But more than anything else we just had a lot of fun hanging with the kids. My personal favorite part of the camp was catching alley-oops from the campers, and it's always cool to give back when you've been as fortunate as we have as NBA players."

Furthermore, all profits from the camp went to the Lakers Youth Foundation.

As stated in the program, Camp Lakers (presented by sponsor dazadi.com.) "focuses on providing young players with a program that improves their overall basketball skills in a fun and challenging environment." The experience is centered upon teaching the values of hard work, teamwork, dedication and sportsmanship on and off the court while providing a solid set of hoops fundamentals.

And what better way to do that than to interact with current NBA players, who happened to be just weeks away from winning the franchise's 15th championship?

"I think winning the title brought a little bit extra to Camp Lakers because the experience taught us a great deal," Powell continued. "And hopefully we were able to pass on some of that knowledge to the kids."

Here's a breakdown of 2009's Camp Lakers:

Camp Highlights
- Each camper received an official Camp Lakers reversible tank top, Lakers bag and a player skill evaluation form.
- The camp included offensive and defensive drill stations, league play, playoffs and skill contests featuring awards.
- Coaches like Lakers assistant Jim Cleamons (pictured) provided lessons you can only get in the NBA.
- Appearances by Shannon Brown, Jordan Farmar, D.J. Mbenga, Josh Powell and Sasha Vujacic.
- Instruction by an elite group of high school and college coaches.
- Campers were grouped by age and ability through a draft process on the first day of camp.
- D.J. Mbenga's story telling, always a winner.
- All campers and staff were housed at Tropicana Gardens, a dorm which featured a camp store, recreation room, coin-operated laundry and dining area with three all-you-can eat meals per day.

Of course, L.A.'s goal for next season will be to match the 16 Hall of Famers with a 16th championship in time to list it on the program for Camp Lakers.

"We hope to continue providing such a resource to the younger fans as they seem to enjoy the experience and come back year after year," Kupchak concluded.
