West, Paul lead Hornets past Lakers 116-105

LOS ANGELES(AP) David West scored 15 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter, Chris Paul added 32 points and 15 assists, and the New Orleans Hornets beat Los Angeles 116-105 on Tuesday night to snap the Lakers' 15-game home winning streak.

West shot 14-of-23 from the floor and 12-of-13 from the foul line in matching his career high. He also grabbed 11 rebounds as the Hornets (21-10) won for the 16th time in 21 games and avenged two losses to the Lakers in New Orleans earlier this season.

Tyson Chandler added 12 points and eight rebounds, and Rasual Butler had 10 points and six rebounds for the Hornets, who shot only 5-of-14 from 3-point range to the Lakers' 16-of-34.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 39 points and seven assists, but scored only two in the fourth quarter, shooting 1-of-6 after going 13-of-16, including 6-of-6 from 3-point range in the first three quarters.

Derek Fisher added 19 points and six assists for the Lakers, who had their six-game winning streak snapped. They're 18-2 at home this season. The Lakers' 27-6 record is tied with Cleveland for the best in the NBA.

Already without third guard Jordan Farmar (left knee) and starting forward Luke Walton (right foot), the Lakers lost sixth man Lamar Odom late in the second quarter with a hyperextended right knee. Odom, who had 12 points and three rebounds in 13 minutes, is scheduled to have an MRI on Wednesday.

West scored nine points during a 15-0 run that gave the Hornets a 109-99 lead with 5:24 remaining. Fisher's 3-pointer with 4:37 left ended a Lakers scoring drought of nearly four minutes, but the Hornets increased their pressure on Bryant and weren't threatened after that.

West scored six points during a 10-4 run early in the third quarter that extended New Orleans' lead to 75-67. But Bryant made three 3-pointers in a span of 93 seconds and Fisher added another as the Lakers outscored the Hornets 25-10 for a 92-85 lead.

The Lakers led 92-89 entering the fourth quarter. Bryant shot 8-of-9 including 4-of-4 from 3-point range for 20 points, and Pau Gasol made all three of his shots and all four of his free throws for 10 points in the third period, combining for all but six of their team's points.

Those 10 points were all Gasol would score. He also had eight rebounds and five assists.

Odom scored four straight points to give the Lakers their first lead at 39-38. It was 50-all when the Hornets scored nine straight points, but Trevor Ariza and Bryant made 3-pointers around a basket by Paul in the final 24 seconds of the half to cut New Orleans' lead to 61-56.

Gasol, averaging 17.6 points, didn't score in the first half, missing all four shots he tried.

Paul had 15 points and four assists in the first quarter, and New Orleans led by as many as nine points before settling for a 32-26 lead. The Hornets shot 52 percent to 40.9 percent for Los Angeles and outrebounded the Lakers 15-9 in the period. There were only two turnovers - one by each team.

Notes: The Lakers had won three straight games over the Hornets including two earlier this season in New Orleans, by scores of 93-86 and 100-97. ... F Melvin Ely, hampered by sore right ankle, returned to action after missing four games and was the first player off the New Orleans bench. He went scoreless in six minutes. ... Vladimir Radmanovic, who started the first 20 games of the season, returned to the Lakers' lineup due to the absence of Walton, who missed his second game and is expected to be sidelined at least two weeks. Radmanovic had three points in 24 minutes. ... Chandler returned to action after serving a one-game suspension for an altercation with Portland's Joel Przybilla last Friday night. The Hornets lost that game, 105-100 at Denver, to snap a four-game losing streak. ... The Lakers hadn't allowed an opposing player to score more than 23 points in their previous seven games.

    Mike Trudell LAKERS-HORNETS PREVIEW

    by Mike Trudell, Lakers.com

The first two times the Lakers and Hornets battled this season, the Lakers used superior length and a combined 38-point lead at halftime to emerge from New Orleans with 93-86 and 100-87 victories.

The season series now shifts west to Los Angeles, with Chris Paul and Co. in town for a Tuesday evening tilt at STAPLES Center. To break down the matchup and discuss how N.O. needs to play to avoid a third consecutive loss to the Lakers, we spoke to Hornets radio studio host Joe Block.

    Lakers - Hornets Preview

Not having home-court advantage throughout the playoffs last season might have hurt the Los Angeles Lakers’ chances of winning the NBA title. They’re determined not to let that happen again.

The Lakers look to build upon the league’s best record and win 16 straight home games in a single season for the first time in 20 years when they wrap up a five-game homestand Tuesday against the New Orleans Hornets.

Los Angeles (27-5) had home-court advantage throughout the Western Conference playoffs last season, but didn’t have it in the NBA finals because Boston had finished with the league’s best record. The Celtics would win all three of their home games in that series, including the Game 6 clincher.

The Lakers had been chasing the Celtics for the league’s best record for the first two months of this season, but a recent slump by Boston has helped surging Los Angeles take over the top spot.

The Lakers defeated Portland 100-86 on Sunday to win their sixth in a row and move one game ahead of Boston and Cleveland in the loss column.

“It’s always a good sign to be on top, but you just can’t relax,” said Pau Gasol, who had 19 points against the Trail Blazers. “There’s too many games and too much competition to just relax and get comfortable and be satisfied with the best record.”

The league’s best record and home-court advantage throughout the postseason would surely benefit Los Angeles, which went 10-1 at Staples Center in last season’s playoffs and is 18-1 at home in 2008-09.

The Lakers are riding their third 15-game home winning streak this decade— the current one dates back to a 106-95 loss to Detroit on Nov. 14. They haven’t won 16 in a row at home in a single season since a 17-game run in 1988-89. The franchise record is 21, set in 1976-77.

“It’s obviously important to have home-court advantage, so we look at it as a challenge to achieve that goal,” reigning league MVP Kobe Bryant said. “Obviously we have a long way to go. It’s a great opportunity. We have quite a few home games here, so we look forward to trying to stretch this out a little bit. We have plenty more gears to go to. Plenty more. I haven’t even played in third gear yet.”

Bryant is averaging 31.0 points on a homestand that started with a 92-83 victory over the Celtics on Christmas. Two days before that win, Bryant had 26 points in the Lakers’ 100-87 victory at New Orleans (20-10).

Los Angeles also beat the Hornets 93-86 in New Orleans on Nov. 12. The Lakers led by 19 points at halftime in each game.

New Orleans, which opened a four-game road trip with a 97-77 win over Portland on Friday, lost to Denver 105-100 on Saturday to snap a four-game winning streak.

Against the Nuggets, the Hornets trailed by 26 points in the third quarter before pulling within three with 9:31 left, but could not complete the comeback.

“Every now and then we get to a point where we aren’t playing real well and things aren’t going our way, and then we just kind of buckled down,” New Orleans coach Byron Scott said. “We kept faith and trust in one another and we just battled back. You always feel that you have something positive to take.”

Chris Paul finished with 30 points and 11 assists on Saturday for his fifth straight double-double. Paul, runner-up to Bryant in last season’s MVP voting, is averaging 23.5 points and 11.5 assists in the two games versus the Lakers this season.

    GAME NOTES
    NOTES & CONNECTIONS

The Lakers currently lead their season series with the Hornets 2-0, winning both games in New Orleans after building 19+ point halftime leads in both contests. Last season, the Lakers split with the Hornets 2-2, going 1-1 both at home and on the road versus New Orleans. The Lakers are 6-4 in their last 10 overall games against New Orleans but have won their last three in a row. The Lakers are 7-3 in their last 10 homes games against the Hornets and 9-3 all-time against the Hornets at STAPLES Center. Since the Hornets move to New Orleans from Charlotte prior to the 2002-03 season, the Lakers have gone 7-2 at New Orleans Arena while going 0-2 at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City during their temporary relocation from 2005-07. Under head coach Phil Jackson, the Lakers are 16-7 against the Hornets. In 2006, the Lakers and Hornets took part in the city of New Orleans first professional sports game following Hurricane Katrina when they met at the New Orleans Arena March 8, 2006. The Lakers won that contest 113-107 behind 40 points from Kobe Bryant. In 2006-07, Bryant scored a series record 50 points 3/23/07, becoming just the second player in NBA history to score 50-plus points in four consecutive games. In their first meeting of last season 11/6/07, Peja Stojakovic made a Lakers opponent record 10 three-point field goals while Chris Paul became only the 7th Lakers opponent to record at least 21 assists in a game and the 1st since John Stockton did so in April of 1990. Additionally, Hornets head coach Byron Scott played 11 seasons for the Lakers including his final NBA campaign in 1996-97 with then rookie Kobe Bryant. Lakers assistant coach Jim Cleamons spent the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons as an assistant coach on Scott’s staff in New Orleans. Hornets center Tyson Chandler attended Dominguez HS in Compton, CA, leading the Dons to three consecutive CIF Division II State Championships and a USA Today High School National Championship as a junior.

    LAKERS SCOUTING REPORT

The pattern that seems to be developing based on the first two games that we have played the Hornets is that we pull ahead and play very solid first halves and then they storm back and challenge for the victory.  We must strive to be more consistent for the full 48 minutes.  This has more to do with our mental toughness than with the New Orleans Hornets.  We know that the Hornets feel this is a crucial game for them.  We beat them twice already this season in their building and Head Coach Byron Scott will mark this as a statement game for his team.  In the last game at New Orleans they were missing Peja Stojakovic and Antonio Daniels.

Prior to Parker, Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki had won the award five consecutive years from 2002-06. The first Spanish player to win the award, Gasol joins Arvydas Sabonis (6-time winner), Toni Kukoc (5-time winner), Nowitzki (5-time winner) Drazen Petrovic (4-time winner) and Parker as notable players to have won this award.

Additionally, the Lakers are ranked THIRD in the NBA in point differential, winning by an average margin of 9.9 points per game through 32 games this season. The franchise record for point differential in a season is +12.3 established by the 1971-72 Lakers. Phil Jackson’s 1999-00 Lakers rank third on this list with a +8.5 average margin of victory.

    BACK-TO-BACK
Tuesday’s contest with the Hornets is the first of a back-to-back set with New Orleans and Golden State. On the season, the Lakers are 4-3 in the first game and 6-1 in the second game of back-to-backs. This year, the Lakers will play 19 sets of back-to-back games during the 2008-09 regular season after having played 17 sets of back-tobacks in each of the previous two seasons. Last season, the Lakers were 13-4 in the first game and 12-5 in the second game of back-to-backs.
