Bryant scores 40 points in Lakers' win

LOS ANGELES(AP) - Kobe Bryant scored 40 points and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Utah Jazz 113-100 Friday night for their fifth straight win and 17th in 18 home games.

Pau Gasol added 21 points, giving him 10,001 for his career, and had 11 rebounds for the Lakers, who were coming off a four-day break.

Mehmet Okur had 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Jazz, who have lost four of their six and three in a row on the road, where they are 7-11. Ronnie Brewer added 20 points, and Deron Williams had 10 points and 12 assists.

Paul Millsap extended his streak of double-doubles to 17 - longest active in the NBA - with 16 points and 17 rebounds despite playing with a strained left leg ligament.

Down 15 points to start the fourth quarter, Utah outscored the Lakers 11-2 to get within seven. Lamar Odom's driving dunk gave the Lakers back their double-digit lead only to see Utah take it away again.

The Lakers didn't help themselves when Bryant missed two consecutive shots and Odom turned the ball over before Andrei Kirilenko scored off his own steal to draw the Jazz to 97-93 with 2:59 remaining.

But it was all Los Angeles in the final 2:38. Trevor Ariza converted a fast-break driving layup, got fouled and made the free throw after the ball spun around in the basket. He then grabbed an offensive rebound and scored off Derek Fisher's air ball to keep the Lakers ahead 104-93. Bryant hit a late 3-pointer and Ariza dunked to dismiss the team they played in last season's Western Conference semifinals, where the Lakers won in six games.

The Jazz whittled a 13-point deficit to three points on a 3-pointer by C.J. Miles with 5 1/2 minutes left in the third. They opened the quarter by outscoring the Lakers 19-8, helped by five in a row by Brewer.

But the Lakers repelled the threat. Andrew Bynum's one-handed block sent Williams sprawling to the court, then Williams missed and Miles committed two consecutive turnovers while the Lakers kept converting on each possession.

By the end of the third, Los Angeles pushed its lead to 81-66 with a 17-4 run during which the Jazz was held without a field goal and coach Jerry Sloan and Williams received technicals during separate timeouts.

Bryant rested the first five minutes of the second, with the Lakers building a 20-point lead as he watched from the bench. He made his presence felt upon returning by scoring off a driving dunk and later hitting a 3-pointer that made it 53-33. Gasol scored the Lakers' final four points that sent them into halftime with a 57-43 lead.

The Lakers built a 17-point lead in the opening quarter behind 55 percent field-goal shooting. The Jazz hit just 8-of-22 with Okur scoring 10 points while playing all 12 minutes.

Notes: The arena lights went out for a split-second early in the fourth quarter. Public address announcer Lawrence Tanter got a laugh when he wished the crowd "Happy New Year'' as soon as they came back on. ... Jazz F Carlos Boozer is set for arthroscopic left knee surgery on Jan. 9. ... Former Laker Rick Fox was a pregame visitor to his old team's locker room, sharing an embrace with coach Phil Jackson. Fox, a regular on the CW show "The Game,'' also does some TV commentary.

    Lakers - Jazz Preview

Off to their best 30-game start since the 1999-2000 championship season, the Los Angeles Lakers have high aspirations for another title.

Utah, meanwhile, is just looking for a healthy starting lineup.

Los Angeles looks for its fifth win in a row on Friday night at Staples Center as it faces the injury-riddled Utah Jazz in the teams' first meeting since last year's playoffs.

The Lakers (25-5) have won seven straight over Utah at home, including three games in the Western Conference semifinals last year. Los Angeles, which also owns a 14-game overall home winning streak, won that series in six games.

This is the first game for the Lakers since Sunday's 130-113 win over Golden State.

Kobe Bryant, third in the NBA with 26.3 points per game, scored 31 against the Warriors as Los Angeles followed up its 92-83 Christmas Day victory over the Boston Celtics with its most points this season.

The Lakers lead the league in scoring, averaging 107.3 points. Utah, meanwhile, has allowed 106.7 points per game while losing its last three road games.

"For us, we just wanted to move on (past the Celtics game)," said Bryant, averaging 29.3 points as Los Angeles has won eight of 10. "We were ready to go. We knew what we had to do, so it was pretty easy for us to switch gears and come out and perform."

Bryant has performed plenty of times in his career against the Jazz. In last season's playoffs versus Utah, he averaged 33.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 7.2 assists.

Backcourt mate Derek Fisher is coming off his best shooting game of the season -- 9-of-12 for 19 points against the Warriors. He had made just 32.0 percent of his shots and averaged 9.3 points in his three previous games.

In last season's playoff series against Utah, however, Fisher hit 57.1 percent from the field, including 11-of-17 from 3-point range, while averaging 14.2 points.

While the Lakers hope to extend their home streak, the Jazz will try to pick up their first victory on the road since defeating Detroit 120-114 in double overtime on Dec. 19.

Utah (19-14) is coming off a 112-95 win over Philadelphia on Monday. Deron Williams, who averaged 22.3 points and 11.5 assists in last season's playoff matchup with Los Angeles, led the Jazz with 27 points against the 76ers, including a season-high four 3-pointers in six attempts.

"It's probably the first time all season I've felt 100 percent, or close to it," said Williams, who has missed 13 games in 2008-09 due to calf and ankle injuries. "It's the first game I've felt like that. Tonight, I was pain-free."

The same cannot be said of the rest of Utah's roster. Mehmet Okur returned Monday following a three-game absence due to back spasms and had his 10th double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

"He looked like he was pretty worn out," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said.

Carlos Boozer could be out for awhile after the team announced on Tuesday that the seventh-year power forward will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. A date for surgery has not been scheduled.

Paul Millsap, though, could return on Friday after missing three games with a sprained knee ligament suffered in Utah's 94-86 loss to Milwaukee on Dec. 23. Millsap is averaging 18.7 points and 11.5 boards in his last 16 games.

Utah's last win in Los Angeles was 98-94 on Jan. 1, 2006.

    LAKERS UPDATES

PAU GASOL 20 POINTS SHY OF 10,000 FOR CAREER / 4TH EVER PLAYER TO GO STRAIGHT FROM EUROPE TO NBA TO 10,000 POINTS
With 9,980 career points, Pau Gasol is now just 20 points shy of 10,000 for his career. To date, 285 NBA players have scored 10,000 career points, 14 of whom were born internationally. Seven members of the 10,000 point club are European born: Dominique Wilkins (born in France, grew up in North Carolina and played collegiately at Georgia), Dirk Nowitzki (born in Germany), Kiki Vandeweghe (born in Germany, grew up in Los Angeles and played collegiately at UCLA), Detlef Schrempf (born in Germany, played senior year of high school in Washington and collegiately at Washington), Vlade Divac (born in Yugoslavia), Rik Smits (born in the Netherlands, played collegiately at Marist College), Peja Stojakovic (born in Yugoslavia). Only three, however, have gone straight from Europe to the NBA (Nowitzki, Divac, Stojakovic). Upon reaching 10,000 points, Gasol will become the 8th fastest internationally born player (in terms of games) to reach that milestone.

JACKSON FASTEST EVER TO 1,000 CAREER VICTORIES
With the Lakers victory over Boston December 25, Phil Jackson became the fastest coach in NBA history to reach 1,000 career victories. Needing 1,423 games to reach 1,000 victories, Jackson arrived at the mark 11 games earlier than Pat Riley (1,434 career games). Jerry Sloan (1,663), Larry Brown (1,762), Don Nelson (1,790) and Lenny Wilkens (1,838) round out the top six fastest to 1,000 victories. Already the fastest coach to 900 career victories, Jackson reached the mark in 1,264 games, 14 games fewer than Riley who held the old mark at 1,278 games. The only coach in NBA history to win better than 70 percent of his games (1,001-423, .703), Jackson ranks 6th all-time in terms of victories. Additionally, the Lakers 116-114 victory over New York December 16 was Phil Jackson’s 1,418th game as a head coach, moving him ahead of Red Auerbach for the 12th most games coached in NBA history. Earlier this season at Dallas (11/11/08), Jackson coached his 1,400th career game. Back on March 25, 2007, Jackson coached career game 1,300 to pass his mentor Red Holzman (1,299) on the all-time list. Later that year, on September 7, 2007, Jackson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, earning induction in his first year of consideration for election.
