Jerry West

Jerry West, also known as “The Logo,” (his silhouette is the NBA official logo) or “Mr. Clutch,” (known for his clutch performances) was born May 28, 1938 in Chelyan, West Virginia where he played as a Mountaineer for West Virginia University from 1956-1960. He led his team to the 1959 NCAA Championship game, where he was awarded the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player Award. In 1960, West was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers as the second overall NBA draft pick, and as the first ever Los Angeles Lakers pick, as the team just moved from Minneapolis to Los Angeles.
The Lakers were the first and only stop for Jerry West, who spent his entire 14-year NBA career (1960-1974) with the Lakers. West averaged 27.0 points per game (ranking 5th All-time in NBA history), and 29.1 ppg in the playoffs (ranking second All-time in NBA annals, trailing only Michael Jordan), inevitably earning him a spot on the All-NBA First Team 10 different occasions. Jerry West is the Lakers all-time scoring leader with 25,192 career points, but his offensive skills were equally matched by his defense, granting him membership on the NBA’s All-Defensive team four times.
This 14-time NBA All-Star, and member of the Los Angeles Lakers 1972 NBA Championship team, coached the Lakers from 1976-1979 before being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980. He was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history during the league’s 50th anniversary season in 1996-1997.
