Marquee Home Games
10/30: Opening Night vs. Houston - The Lakers christen the '07-'08 season by welcoming in Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady, and former Kings coach Rick Adelman, who took over the reigns in Houston after Jeff Van Gundy was dismissed. The new coach should bring a new, more uptempo style. The Lakers & Rockets went to overtime twice last season in route to splitting the season series.
12/25: Holiday Cheer - the high flying Phoenix Suns roll into STAPLES for this holiday tilt. See details below.
12/30: A Rivalry Renewed - for the first time in years the Lakers/Celtics matchup will have the country watching. Throw Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, & Kobe Bryant on the same court and you're almost halfway to your own private All-Star game. Put them on the biggest stage in the NBA on the day before New Year's Eve and you've got all the pieces in place for a big night.
1/21: A Rare Monday - the only Monday night home game on the slate features two of the most exciting players in the league - Allen Iverson & Carmelo Anthony.
1/27: Mamba & the King - the Lakers will don their White uniforms when they take on the defending Eastern Conference Champion Cavs in a Sunday afternoon match up. Having Lebron James & Kobe Bryant on the court at the same time should have the STAPLES Center rocking even when the sun's out.
2/28: Hot Hot Heat - Wade & Shaq in LA and it's not a holiday? Apparently national television isn't interested in watching fences mend.
3/13: The Champs - a Sunday afternoon tilt with the defending champions with playoff seeding on the line is never a bad time.
Christmas Day
For the 9th consecutive year, since the lock out shortened 1998-99 season, the Lakers play on Christmas Day. Previous opponents have included the Spurs, Blazers, 76ers, Kings, Rockets, and since Shaquille O' Neal left town - the Miami Heat. This year they face the Phoenix Suns, the team that has eliminated them from the playoffs in two consecutive seasons. The Lakers 2-6 record in these games, their 2-6 record against Phoenix last season, and having lost 5 straight Christmas Day games doesn't offer much optimism.
Miami now shifts to face the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first game of the doubleheader.
Welcoming '08 With Some Rest
The Lakers see their longest break in the schedule come after a December 30th game with their newly revived rivals the Boston Celtics. The Purple & Gold won't have to play another game until their January 4th meeting with the Philadelphia 76ers. This gives the team a rare 4-day break after the 30th game of the season.
Longest Home Stand
13 days of home cooking and a leisurely five game schedule await the team from Christmas Day until January 6th. The lineup is a tough one with Phoenix, Utah, Boston, Philly, & Indiana slated to come to LA, but with no back-to-backs and a couple of multi-day rest it's more than manageable.
The Grammys Trip
@DET, @TOR, @WAS, @NJN, @ATL, @ ORL, @MIA, @CHA, @MIN
The February tradition continues for the Lakers. Last season's eight-game roadie is eclipsed by this years nine-game journey starting the last day in January and continuing up through the All-Star break. Six of the nine games are against playoff teams from last year, thanks to the ineptitude of the Eastern Conference that stat isn't nearly as daunting as it sounds, but when packed into 14 day stretch nothing will come easy.
The trip includes three back-to-backs (DET/TOR, NJN/ATL, MIA/CHA) each with the tougher game being the front end.
Back-To-Backs
17 Total | Home - 0 | Road - 9 | Split - 8
The 17 total back-to-backs are overloaded in February with 6 back-to-backs spread over our shortest month. The benefit of this is there only being two in March and the one in April is really a home & home as the Lakers have a "road" game against the Clippers on April 10th then host the Hornets on the 11th. The other "road" contest with the Clips also happens to be the first half of the Clippers/Sonics roadie on February 23rd & 24th.
Toughest Back-To-Back
Of the nine road backers the toughest one comes early on as the team is slated to face off with the Spurs & Rockets on back to back nights in mid-November. Both teams return essentially the same teams last year that won a combined 110 games. At least they get the defending champs on the front end before having to deal with big Yao.
Strangest Back-To-Back
The Warriors were the Cinderella story of the 2007 playoffs by defeating the #1 seeded Mavericks in the first round. The Lakers will get all they can handle of Baron Davis and the boys as they face them on consecutive days in late March. The front end is scheduled for Sunday the 23rd at 6:30pm at STAPLES Center with the back end starting 25 hours later in Oakland.
Wake Up With The Lakers
Set the alarm clock early on December 23rd and February 3rd for a couple of 9am West Coast start times. These games against the Knicks & Wizards are guaranteed to go great with some eggs and a glass of juice. Church goers should set the DVR now and rush home for the second half.
