Laker Girls Blog 02/28/11 - Bria
Hey Laker’s Fans!
It’s Bria here, writing to all of you to let you know how exciting and how much fun it was to have the 2011 NBA All Star game in Los Angeles this year!
Los Angeles is my hometown and the last time the NBA All Star game was here, was in 2004. At that time, I was dancing for the L.A. Sparks, WNBA kids dance team! Now, I am a Laker Girl! Our dance team was heavily involved in the All Star festivities this year.
The first part of the festivities began for us on Thursday (February 17th) as we got to participate in the NBA Jam Session Opening Night that took place at the Convention Center. We had a chance to be up close and personal with all you loyal fans! We were signing photos, taking pictures and just mingling amongst the many people in attendance.
It was very exciting to be there as kind of a precursor of the more exciting events scheduled for the rest of NBA All Star weekend. In the days following that, we had the privilege to participate and be a part of the Celebrity game, Rookie/Sophomore game, All-Star Saturday Night and the NBA All-Star game itself.
We performed dance routines at each of these games, participated in player intros (made tunnels that he players could run out of) and also tossed “free stuff’ (like fun t-shirts and towels…) into the crowds at timeouts! It was fun.
At one of the many Jam Session appearances that we were at, we held a mini dance clinic for young girls who want to be Laker Girls when they grow up and some that just wanted to dance for fun. This particular session was one of my favorite things we did that weekend. The little girls were so excited to meet us and it was great meeting them. I love when I feel like we make a difference in a young person’s life, just by doing something so little - like carry a conversation with them or teach them a dance move. A little can go a long way (our Director Lisa Estrada always reminds us!)
During the NBA All Star game player introductions, for the East & West teams, we had the chance to be on stage and “rock out” with Lenny Kravitz as he performed! We also had the time of our lives as all of us Laker Girls got to dance with Rihanna as she performed during the halftime show! It was so amazing to be apart of! Although the NBA All Star weekend was extremely time consuming, it was totally worth it in the end! I feel like it all went well and we learned a lot from these experiences.
Plus, the WEST was victorious!!!
Once the NBA All Star festivities were over, we still had Laker Girls rehearsal on Monday and a game that following Tuesday night against the Atlanta Hawks. Of course we were victorious!
In addition, that night at our game, Carl’s Jr. coupons were given out alongside our Laker Girl team photo for a free large drink! Some of my teammates are featured on the cup so make sure you go get yours today!
Thank you so much for reading my blog and all that I had to share about the NBA All Star weekend!
Hope to see ya soon…….
