Laker Girls Blog 12/14/09 - Erica W.
Hey Lakers fans!!
Well, we’ve picked up right where we left off last June! An 18-3 start, not too shabby. I feel so lucky to have been part of the Lakers 2009 Championship season last year and I am so excited to be back for my second year as a Laker Girl. I like to think I helped bring a bit of luck to the team! (ha ha)
Making it back for another year on the Laker Girls squad wasn’t easy. While the process stays the same, we must re-audition every year, so the pressure’s really on! I think auditions get more competitive each year…….who wouldn’t want to be part of a team with this kind of tradition?
In addition to dancing at games, I am also one of five girls who host “Lakers TV.” Basically, our job is to host the pre-game show airing on the scoreboard before tip-off, as well as contests during halftime and third quarter break. (hopefully another lucky fan will win the Mirage Big Shot Jackpot this year!) While I love this responsibility, it takes a lot of hard work to prepare.
As most of us have been dancers our whole lives, performing as a Laker Girl comes more naturally to us. Hosting, while similar in that it requires good memorization skills and for one to feel comfortable on camera, also demands that you be confident speaking to a live audience as well. Essentially, I feel I am acting as the game’s emcee. It is a task that definitely becomes easier with practice.
December is here and so are the holidays. Unquestionably my favorite month, so many fun traditions take place this time of year. Growing up out-of-state with snow in the winter, these traditions have changed a little since moving to L.A.. Perhaps the most notable new one for me is the Lakers Christmas Day game. As they did last year, my family will travel west to join me in celebrating the holidays. Last Christmas, we discussed our victory over Boston at a dinner with all the fixings, and I expect this year we’ll do the same while talking about a win over Cleveland! Afterwards, we’ll head up north to visit some of my extended family (also Lakers fans) that I don’t get to see that often, stopping along the way to grab some Carl’s Jr. during the drive!
After the excitement from the holidays settles, the rest of this season promises to be one to remember. We will witness history as Kobe nears Jerry West’s all-time scoring record. Maybe we’ll see another crazy buzzer-beater like the one against Miami - right? Is a trip down Figueroa celebrating our 16th Championship too much to ask Santa for? I didn’t think so!
Happy Holidays to everyone! Go Lakers!!
