South Bay Lakers

Season Tickets Now Available

As the team prepares to move to the new UCLA Health Training Center, it will rebrand as the South Bay Lakers beginning next season. With the goal of aligning closer to its parent club, South Bay will adopt the “Lakers” name while also keeping the purple and gold colors. To maintain its own identity, the club will also add the “South Bay blue” color to its uniforms, while its secondary logo will feature the iconic Manhattan Beach Pier as a tribute to the region the team calls home.

NBA Call-Ups, Division Title Highlight D-Fenders' Season

The impact of the D-Fenders’ 2016-17 campaign was felt at the NBA level, especially for their parent club. David Nwaba surprised all involved by going from D-League tryout participant to Los Angeles Laker in a matter of months, using his trademark defense to earn a multi-year NBA contract. Plus, Ivica Zubac sharpened his game with the D-Fenders, averaging 15.8 points and 9.7 rebounds before getting his chance to shine as the Lakers’ starting center.

In addition to those that split time between the D-Fenders and Lakers, several others found considerable success. Justin Harper also received a call-up to the Philadelphia 76ers, while Vander Blue averaged the D-League’s second-most points (24.8) and climbed into third place on the all-time scoring rankings (4,024).

Add in the tactics of first-year coach Coby Karl and leadership of league assists leader Josh Magette (9.4 apg), and the result was the team’s second straight Pacific Division title, which was dedicated to the memory of video coordinator Adam Cave, who tragically passed away mid-season. However, the season concluded with a loss in the Western Conference Semifinals.

South Bay Lakers/LA D-Fenders History

In July 2006, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Buss family became the first NBA franchise to own an NBA Development League team, the Los Angeles D-Fenders. The D-Fenders are the sole affiliate of the Lakers and are committed to providing the highest quality of emerging talent.

The NBA D-League, founded in 2001, is the NBA's official minor league which features 16 teams with direct affiliations to NBA teams and is designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally by offering NBA caliber basketball. In fostering the league's connection to the community, its D-League teams, players and staff promote youth basketball, support local needs and interests, and assist in educational development through NBA D-League Cares program. The NBA D-League also advances the game of basketball as the research and development arm of the NBA.

The D-Fenders play their home games at Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, CA, which is also the Lakers practice facility.

The Los Angeles D-Fenders will show many of their games on Time Warner Cable SportsNet.
