Lakers Reading and Learning Centers

The Lakers Youth Foundation has created 15 Reading and Learning Centers at youth clubs throughout Los Angeles and Hawaii. New carpet, paint, furniture, wall graphics, books, audio/visual equipment, framed photos and computers are installed to create an upbeat and safe environment for kids to read and learn.

The Lakers and the NBA brought out their best and brightest to dedicate the newest Lakers Reading and Learning Center. The updated space will provide the youth members of the Red Shield with a safe place to do homework and explore other educational interests.

Lakers Open Reading and Learning Center
As part of the 2009 NBA Finals, the Los Angeles Lakers unveiled the 14th Lakers Reading & Learning Center. This time, it was the Salesian Family Youth Center in Boyle Heights that benefitted from the combined resources of NBA Cares, Toyota Project Rebound, Hewlett Packard, and the Lakers Youth Foundation. The Salesian Family Youth Center, like the other 13 Lakers Reading & Learning Centers throughout Los Angeles and Hawaii, received major renovations, including: new carpet, paint, Lakers wall graphics, computers, furniture, books and audio-visual equipment. Reading and Learning Center Lakers Open Reading and Learning Center
On Wednesday, October 15th, the Los Angeles Lakers, Toyota and the NBA teamed up to unveil the season’s first Lakers Reading & Learning Center at the Boys & Girls Club of East Los Angeles. The renovation project dramatically transformed three rooms and a hallway at the 60 year old Club. New carpet, paint, furniture, wall graphics, books, audio/visual equipment, framed photos and computers were all provided with funding from The Lakers Youth Foundation and Toyota Project Rebound. On April 9, Lakers players Lamar Odom and Vladimir Radmanovic visited the Boys & Girls Club of Hollywood after practice to dedicate the club’s new basketball court, unveil a state-of-the-art technology center and host a youth basketball clinic. On Tuesday, October 11, the Lakers Youth Foundation unveiled the newest Lakers Reading Room at the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii’s Charles C. Spalding Clubhouse. This is the eighth Reading Room to be created by the Lakers under the NBA’s Read to Achieve program. Lakers Kobe Bryant, Brian Cook, Lamar Odom, Luke Walton, Assistant Coaches Kurt Rambis and Brian Shaw, and the Laker Girls were joined by Governor Linda Lingle and Representative Scott Saiki at the press conference announcing the new Lakers Reading Room. During training camp, Los Angeles Lakers players Derek Fisher, Lamar Odom, Luke Walton and Brian Cook, along with the Laker Girls, stopped by the Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii’s Hale Pono Clubhouse on Tuesday, October 9, to dedicate the newest Lakers Reading Room. This is the team’s second Lakers Reading Room in Hawaii and ninth overall. The first Lakers Reading Room in Oahu was dedicated at the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii’s Spalding Clubhouse during the team’s last visit in 2005. Read more...

Florence Avenue Elementary School students were very excited on Wednesday, September 28th for the Grand Opening of their library. Partnering with The Wonder of Reading, the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation contributed $35,000 to build a new school library to accommodate Florence Avenue's growing student population of more than 1,000 children. James Worthy, Brian Cook, and the Laker girls joined together on September 23, 2004 to help the children of Monterey Park celebrate the start of a new school year. The Lakers organization dedicated a Lakers Reading Room at the Boys and Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley, which was the setting for the Laker representatives and children to share time together during a Reading Time Out.
