Rookies, Luke Walton and Brian Cook, and Lakers TV host, Nicole Irving, paid a visit to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on September 18, to get a behind the scenes look at how the Marines train and operate. The day long tour included experiencing the helicopter simulator, visiting the flight line and helo squadrons, and an interactive demonstration with the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program.
The mutual respect between the Marines and the players was evident throughout the day long visit. Cook said, “It makes me feel good knowing they look up to me, but I look up to them because they are risking their lives for our country.”
The awareness the players bring to their fans by making visits such as these and voicing who their heroes are has a resonating effect on their fans and followers. According to Sgt. Joe McMullen, CH-53E crew chief, Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462, “It’s great that they are here because children and people look up to them as idols -- and if the people they look up to think something is important, then they will see the importance.”
