A 10th grader at Granada Hills Charter High School, Zachary Katz consistently participates, collaborates and brings curiosity and interest into the classroom. He is always willing to help other students, as he shares his knowledge and enthusiasm. As the class Salutatorian, Stephanie Ortega an 8th grader at John Adams Middle School, has the second highest GPA in her class, is involved in School Leadership and volunteers on campus during her off-track time. Carlos Vanegas is a 3rd grader at Independence Elementary who consistently works hard to improve in every area, and he takes great pride in his work. A leader in the classroom, he has proven himself to be a very reliable role model for his peers.
Three teachers were also recognized for their outstanding achievements: Pam Hanief from Ramona Elementary, Mario Torres from John Adams Middle School, and Eva Araujo from Arthur F. Corey Elementary School.
Pam Hanief, a 2nd grade teacher at Ramona Elementary, has co-directed and choreographed the school's Talent Show for 5 years. She is also a Beginning Teacher Support provider, member of the School Site Council and a participant of the project REACH program. In addition to teaching his regular classes, Mario Torres, a math teacher at John Adams Middle School, participates in an after-school tutoring program and Saturday Invention classes. He also works with high risk students and mentors new staff members on his own time. A 4th grade teacher at Arthur F. Corey Elementary School, while Eva Arajo is teaching in a full-inclusion classroom where several children with special needs look up to her as a teacher and a role model, she is also the GATE coordinator for the Buena Park School District.
The six honorees received tickets to the April 17th Lakers game against the Dallas Mavericks. They had the honor of being recognized at halftime on center court. Each recipient was presented with a plaque marking his/her achievement and a Staples gift certificate. The nominations for the April Student and Teacher of the Month were submitted by principals and teachers of each school based on exemplary teaching efforts, academic achievement, or extracurricular activities.
