April 2013 Student & Educator of the Month Winners

Student & Educator of the month - April 2013

The Lakers are proud to announce the April 2013 Student and Educator of the Month winners! This month’s student winners are Steve Castro, Joseph Mosley and Guistinna Tun. The winning teacher is Maria Perez. The winning principal is Les Ojeda. Each winner demonstrates an outstanding commitment to academia, athletics, and community outreach.

Steve Castro, a 6th grade student at Wilkerson Elementary. This honor student achieved a perfect score on the California Standard Test in Math. Steve is described as reliable, trustworthy, and outstanding. Steve was also named Student of the Month at his school in September.

Joseph Mosley, an 8th grade student at Gompers Middle School. Joseph is known for the tremendous effort he puts into his school work. He recently received a medal for most improved student in his class. Joseph has a passion for basketball and he participates in the school’s basketball program.

Guistinna Tun, an 8th grade student at Durfee School. Guistinna is a straight A student who is always pursuing a new challenge. She is very involved in extracurricular activities as well and holds the title of President for her school’s Honor Society.

Maria Perez, a teacher at Niemes Elementary. Ms. Perez goes above and beyond her job description. She has a genuine concern for her students and is a great resource for teachers, parents, and administration. She also conducts workshops for parents to help their child succeed at home.

Les Ojeda, the principal at Suzanne Middle School. Mr. Ojeda has an incredible dedication and passion for what he does. He oversaw grants that provided classroom computers and arranged exchanges with overseas schools. Mr. Ojeda is also very involved in the community having coached several youth sports teams among other activities. Each Student and Educator of the Month winner was invited to the home game on April 14th versus the San Antonio Spurs. They were honored during a halftime presentation where they received a plaque and a $50 gift certificate to Staples. The nominations for the April Student and Educator of the Month were submitted by principals and teachers of each school based on exemplary teaching efforts, academic achievement or extracurricular activities.
