Read to Achieve Grand Prize - Birdielee V. Bright Elem. School
Students in Ms. Solomon’s 5th grade class at Birdielee V. Bright Elementary School in Los Angeles, CA were named as one of the grand prize winners of this year’s Read to Achieve contest! All of the students in this class successfully completed the program, where first and second graders were challenged to read outside of the classroom for 15 minutes a day, 3 days per week, for a six week period, while students in grades 3, 4, and 5 were challenged to read six multi-chapter books outside of the classroom.
In total, 64 schools throughout the Greater Los Angeles area participated in this year’s Read to Achieve Reading Challenge. Grand prize winners were randomly selected amongst all classrooms with 100% program completion. For their achievement, Ms. Solomon’s students were treated to a reading session with Lakers guard Darius Morris and two Laker Girls. To top off this prize the students also got to have an ice cream party with the Lakers stars.
Ms. Solomon’s class was not aware that they had won one of the grand prizes from the Lakers Reading Challenge and were told they needed to attend a mandatory study meeting in the library after school. As the students waited patiently for their study hall session to begin Darius Morris and the Laker Girls were hiding in the teachers’ lounge to make their grand appearance. The principal entered in to the library first to tell them about what a great job they had done on the Reading Challenge and that they had some special visitors…from there the special guests entered the library to gasps and then loud cheers.
After the excitement subdued the Laker Girls and Morris started to read a book written by John Wooden called “Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success.” While reading about the different pillars to success the students had questions about what made Darius Morris and the Lakers Girls successful. All were in complete agreement and said that hard work was their key to success and to never give up on your dreams.
Next up, the students were served chocolate and vanilla ice cream sundaes, hand scooped by Darius Morris. Once they finished eating, the Laker Girls and Morris happily signed autographs for the kids and took photos. Thank you to Ms. Skinner and Ms. Solomon for encouraging the students of Bright Elementary to take part in the Lakers Reading Challenge and for hosting the Lakers for an afternoon. The Lakers would like to congratulate all the students who took part in Read to Achieve this year and look forward to many more strong readers in the future!
