March 2013 Student & Educator of the Month Winners
The Lakers are proud to announce the March 2013 Student and Educator of the Month winners! This month’s student winners are MaiLan Kasch, Jack Russo and Landrey Kiker. The winning teachers are Jesse Taylor and Sofia Renzi. The winning principal is Mauro Bautista. Each winner demonstrates an outstanding commitment to academia, athletics, and community outreach.
MaiLan Kasch, a 5th grade student at Farragut Elementary. This star student has straight A’s and is a part of the 5th grade math club. She also participates in a program that helps build awareness of environmental sustainability. MaiLan has studied Mandarin, and during her free time she helps younger kids at the language center.
Jack Russo, a 7th grade student at Manhattan Beach Middle School. Jack is described as the epitome of excellence in effort. He inspires others with his smile, spirit, and refusal to quit. He has a love for sports, friendships, and life which is admired by those who surround him.
Landrey Kiker, a 9th grade student at Pomona High School. Landrey strives for excellence within the classroom by pushing his critical thinking skills on a daily basis. He earned straight A’s in an advance course load during his first semester of high school. Outside of class, Landrey is also very involved in the school’s music program.
Jesse Taylor, a teacher at Opportunities for Learning Public Charter School. Mr. Taylor inspires his students to give their best every day. He has encouraged his students to work through adversity, taught them the importance of teamwork, as well as respect and humility. Mr. Taylor is also the coach of an afterschool basketball team he helped start.
Sofia Renzi, a teacher at Florence Avenue Elementary. Ms. Renzi is a special education teacher whose students have made up to one year in academic progress. She goes above and beyond spending time planning and creating lessons for her students. Her dedication, professionalism, and enthusiasm is greatly acknowledged and admired by those around her.
Mauro Bautista, the principal at the Mendez Learning Center High School. Mr. Bautista is described as an outstanding leader who has made vast improvements for the school. Not only have overall test scores increased, but the Mendez Learning Center was also recognized as the School of the Year for Family and Community Engagement during Mr. Bautista’s tenure.
Each Student and Educator of the Month winner was invited to the home game on March 17th versus the Sacramento Kings. They were honored during a halftime presentation where they received a plaque and a $50 gift certificate to Staples. The nominations for the March Student and Educator of the Month were submitted by principals and teachers of each school based on exemplary teaching efforts, academic achievement or extracurricular activities.
