Continuing their commitment to emphasize the importance of exercise, nutrition, and an active lifestyle in the community, the Los Angeles Lakers and Anthem Blue Cross invited local elementary and middle schools to attend the first annual “Fit for Life Health Fair” on Tuesday, April 6. The schools earned their invitation to the Health Fair based on their participation in the Lakers Fit For Life Trivia Challenge, which challenged students to answer questions about healthy eating habits and various ways for children to be fit for life. All of the information used in the trivia challenge came from information that is currently available at the Fit For Life webpage. In total, 20 schools were invited to attend the Health Fair, where they were treated to a healthy lunch and a fun-filled day under the sun to exercise with Lakers and the Laker Girls.
The afternoon began with a lunch for the kids that included a low fat turkey sandwich from Jersey Mike’s Subs, organic fruit provided by Melissa’s Produce, and bottled water. They were then joined by their first special guest, celebrity chef Nikki Shaw, who gave the students valuable tips for making healthy eating choices. Chef Nikki then quizzed the students on the information and awarded Lakers prizes.
After Chef Nikki’s information session, it was time to get active! First, the Laker Girls led the already excited crowd through some basic stretches. Once the group was warmed-up, the students took turns rotating between different exercise stations, including: basketball conditioning drills with Lakers Assistant Coach Brian Shaw , hula-hooping with the Laker Girls, cone-tipping with DJ Mbenga, a limbo contest with the Laker Girls, and capture the flag with Lakers Sasha Vujacic. At each of the stations, the students had a chance to work on the speed, endurance, or flexibility.
After the long day of exercise, each student was given a goodie bag to take home. Each bag included a Lakers team photo, stickers, a Lakers water bottle and a healthy body cookbook from Anthem Blue Cross’ Kids In Charge of Kalories (KICK) program. The Lakers and Anthem Blue Cross know these mementos will remind each child to continue to practice healthy habits and be Fit For Life!
