8th Annual Chick Hearn Night
On Sunday, November 22rd the Los Angeles Lakers celebrated Chick Hearn Night during the Lakers-Thunder game at STAPLES Center. Chick Hearn Night has been celebrated at the Lakers home game closest to Chick’s birthday, every season since the Lakers Hall of Fame broadcaster’s passing in 2002. This year, the Lakers celebrated by holding their annual book drive, honoring winners of the Chick Hearn Memorial Scholarship, and distributing commemorative jerseys to all fans in attendance.
Before the game, the Lakers Youth Foundation and Everybody Wins! Los Angeles celebrated Chick’s love for reading by holding a book drive in STAR Plaza. Lakers fans brought new children’s books to be donated in Chick’s memory. This year 575 books were collected and donated to Everybody Wins! Los Angeles, an organization which aims to increase children’s prospects for success in school and in life through one-to-one reading experiences with caring adults or older students.
At halftime of the game, Marge Hearn and Geneva Overholser of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism recognized Trevor Thompson and Alex Goldsmith as the winners of the Chick Hearn Memorial Scholarship for 2010. The Chick Hearn Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually and is funded by an endowment established by the Los Angeles Lakers, Marge Hearn, and hundreds of Lakers fans whom contributed to the scholarship fund at USC Annenberg.
This year’s recipients exemplify excellence in sports journalism. Trevor Thompson is a junior at USC, majoring in broadcast journalism. He is an anchor for USC’s Annenberg TV News, where he has also served as a sports reporter. Trevor has hosted sports programs for KSCR, USC’s campus radio station and he is currently an intern for KCAL/KCBS television. Alex Goldsmith is a senior at USC and is also a broadcast journalism major. Alex is a director at Annenberg TV News and works closely with the USC ice hockey team, as their head of team media and official team blogger. He has served as play-by-play announcer and color commentator for KSCR’s coverage of USC football, baseball and women’s soccer.
Along with the scholarship, the students will have the opportunity to intern at Fox Sports Net, working on Lakers broadcasts and other projects. The Lakers applaud both recipients for their work and wish them great success in the future!
