Lakers teammate Maurice Evans and the Laker Girls joined Vladimir Radmanovic on his visit with at-risk children living at Five Acres in Altadena on Wednesday, February 14th. Vladimir, Maurice and the Laker Girls had a short question and answer session with 85 boys and girls who are part of the agency’s residential program. They visited to Five Acres on this day to demonstrate a need for these children to be included in Valentine’s Day celebrations.
After speaking to the boys and girls about overcoming adversity, Vladimir and Maurice demonstrated various basketball techniques, organized shooting contests for the kids, and coached the kids in a short scrimmage. The teammates signed autographs for every child and Vladimir donated 30 tickets for children to come to see the Lakers take on the Cavaliers the following night.
“This is an extraordinary gesture from a top athlete who recognizes that a day like Valentine’s Day should be inclusive of the types of children who are in our care,” said Robert Ketch, executive director of Five Acres. “We are deeply grateful (for) Vladimir’s generosity and recognition that at-risk boys and girls need the affection and attention normally reserved for mainstream adults on Valentine’s Day.”
Founded in 1888, Five Acres is a child and family services agency dedicated to strengthening families and preventing child abuse through treatment and education in its community-based and residential programs. Originally an orphanage, its current array of services includes residential care and education, mental health services in homes and schools, foster care and adoptions, and domestic violence prevention.
