NEW YORK, July 7, 2003 – New York Knickerbockers President and General Manager Scott Layden announced today that first-round draft choice Mike Sweetney been signed to a contract. He is expected to participate in the team’s entry at the Reebok Pro Summer League from July 14-20, in Boston, MA and in the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue from July 21-26 in Salt Lake City, UT. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sweetney, 20, became the ninth overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft after finishing his junior year at Georgetown as the school’s seventh all-time leading scorer (1,750), fifth-leading rebounder (887) and sixth-leading shot-blocker (180). At the conclusion of the 2002-03 season, the 6-8, 260-pound forward was named First Team All-Big East for the second consecutive season and was the only player in the nation to rank in the top 20 in scoring (22.8, ninth) and rebounding (10.4, fifteenth).

The NBA’s New York Knickerbockers basketball team, completing its 57th year of operation, is part of Madison Square Garden, L.P. Cablevision Systems Corporation owns a controlling interest in MSG L.P., which also includes the New York Rangers (NHL), the New York Liberty (WNBA), the MSG Network, FOX Sports Net and the Madison Square Garden arena complex, located in the heart of the New York metropolitan area.
