The New York Knickerbockers marked their 61st season as a charter member of the NBA with a 33-49 (.402) regular season mark...Knicks finished fourth in the Atlantic Division, 14 games behind division champion Toronto, and failed to qualify for the NBA Playoffs.
The Record (33-49): Knicks’ win total (33) represented a 10-game improvement from the previous season, as the Knicks were one of only five NBA teams to register an increase of at least 10 games in the win column in 2006-07 (along with Toronto, Houston, Portland & Utah)...Among all Eastern Conference teams, only Toronto (+20) recorded a bigger improvement than the Knicks...Knicks’ 10-win improvement was their best over two full seasons since 1995-96 and 1996-97, when they went from 47 to 57 wins...Knicks were mathematically eliminated from the Eastern Conference Playoff race on Apr. 13 (Game No. 79), with a 100-86 loss at New Jersey...Knicks went just 9-17 in their first 26 games (Nov. 1-Dec. 26), then ripped off 20 wins in their next 37 games (Dec. 18-Mar. 10) to climb into the East’s eighth spot with a 29-34 record following a last-second, 90-89 win at Washington on Mar. 10...Knicks then lost 15 of their last 19 games (Mar. 14-Apr. 18) to fall out of Playoff contention.
At Home (19-22): Knicks’ 19 wins at home were fourth-lowest total in Eastern Conference...Knicks ran off seven straight home wins from Jan. 26-Mar. 2, beating Miami (twice), Lakers, Clippers, Orlando, Milwaukee & Golden State (five of seven wins came against Playoff-bound teams)...Longest home losing streak was four, twice (Nov. 18-Dec. 2 and Apr. 4-16)...Knicks lost nine of their last 11 home games.
On The Road (14-27): Knicks’ 14 road wins nearly doubled last season’s total (8-33) and represented their highest road win total since 2003-04 (16-25)...Longest road winning streak was two, twice (Jan. 3-5 at Portland and Seattle; Mar. 3-10 at Atlanta and Washington)...Longest road losing streak was six (Dec. 1-Jan. 2)...Knicks lost seven of their last nine road games.
Won-Lost StreaksThe Knicks’ longest winning streak was three games, twice (Dec. 18-22 and Jan. 3-10)...Longest losing streak was five games (Apr. 9-16)...Knicks alternated wins and losses over a span of 11 games from Feb. 6-Mar. 2.
By The Months: Knicks were 6-11 in November, 7-9 in December, 7-8 in January, 6-5 in February, 5-9 in March and 2-7 in April...In February (6-5), Knicks recorded their first winning month since December 2004 (9-7).
East/West: Knicks went 22-30 against the Eastern Conference (most wins against the East since they went 31-23 vs. East in 2003-04), 11-19 against the West...Knicks recorded two season sweeps: over Memphis (2-0, first sweep vs. Grizz since 1999-2000) and the Lakers (2-0, first sweep vs. Lakers since 2000-01)...On the flip side, Knicks were swept in the season series by Dallas (0-2), Houston (0-2), Minnesota (0-2), New Jersey (0-4), New Orleans/Oklahoma City (0-2), Phoenix (0-2) and San Antonio (0-2).
On The Leader Board: Eddy Curry finished fourth in the NBA in field goal percentage (.576), trailing only Nets’ Mikki Moore (.609), Magic’s Dwight Howard (.603) and Warriors’ Andris Biedrins (.599)...Marked fifth straight season Eddy ranked in the League’s Top 15 in shooting...Curry also ranked 23rd in scoring (19.5) and 29th in rebounding (7.0) on NBA Leader Board...Stephon Marbury was 20th in the NBA in assists (5.4) and 25th in minutes per game (37.1)...Jamal Crawford was 29th in NBA in free throw percentage (.838) and 24th in minutes per game (37.3), falling short of leader board minimums in ppg and apg...Steve Francis was 38th in free throw percentage (.829)...Nate Robinson was 29th in three-point shooting (.390)...As injury cut short second half of season, David Lee fell short of minimums to qualify for NBA Leader Board in field goal percentage and rebounding. At time of leg injury, David was second in NBA in shooting from the floor (.606) and seventh in rebounding (10.7).
On The (Rookie) Leader Board: On the NBA’s Rookie Leader Board (using rookie statistical qualifiers), Renaldo Balkman finished eighth in rebounding (4.3), sixth in steals (0.84) and seventh in blocks (0.65)...Mardy Collins finished 10th in assists (1.6).
Isiah: In his first season as head coach, Knicks President of Basketball Operations Isiah Thomas guided the club to a 33-49 mark and a 10-victory improvement over the prior season...The Basketball Hall of Famer now has a career head coaching mark of 164-164 (.500) in four NBA seasons (three with Indiana, one with New York).
Oh Captain, My Captain (Times Three): On Nov. 1, senior Knick Stephon Marbury and veterans Steve Francis and Jamal Crawford were named team tri-captains.
New Faces Of ’07: In his third full season (fourth season overall) as president, basketball operations, Thomas continued a series of player moves geared to the short- and long-term improvement of the Knicks...Opening Night roster featured veteran newcomers Kelvin Cato and Jared Jeffries, along with ’06 Draft picks Renaldo Balkman and Mardy Collins...On Mar. 23, Thomas authored an NBA first with the unprecedented signing of free agent Randolph Morris, as the Kentucky center became the first player in history to jump from the NCAA Tournament to the NBA in the same week...For the first time in his four Knicks seasons, Thomas did not swing a major deal at the February trading deadline...Tri-captain Stephon Marbury (who joined NY on Jan. 5, 2004) remained senior Knick in terms of continuous service.
Youth Shall Be Served: Knicks continued accent on youth in 2006-07, with rookies Balkman, Collins and Morris joining a host of young veterans...The 2006-07 Knicks roster averaged 26 years of age for the second straight year; youngest Knicks squad since 1988-89 (25.4)...Knicks continued a youth movement that began in earnest in 2004-05, when the roster averaged 27.1 years.
Time Is Tight: Close games and frantic finishes became a Knicks trademark in 2006-07...Knicks played 11 games this season which were decided in the last 10 seconds (game-turning points scored in the final 10 seconds of the fourth quarter or the final OT session), going 7-4 in those 11 games...Knicks were 10-10 in games decided by three points or less, and were one of only nine NBA teams to record at least 10 wins by three points or less in ‘06-’07.
Buzzer Beaters: Knicks had three game-winning, game-ending buzzer-beaters in ‘06-07: Marbury’s coast-to-coast driving layup against Utah on Dec. 18 (97-96, OT); Lee’s miracle tip-in of Crawford’s inbound pass that came with 0:00.1 left in the second OT vs. Charlotte on Dec. 20 (111-109), and Francis’ three-point bomb at Washington on Mar. 10 (90-89)...Knicks have 14 recorded game-winning buzzer-beaters since 1980.
Captain Late: Jamal Crawford authored another chapter of his patented late-game heroics on Nov. 8 at Denver, when he capped a 35-point night by stealing Eduardo Najera’s pass and nailing a rainbow three-pointer with :03.7 left to give NY a come-from-behind 109-107 win...It was Jamal’s seventh career game-winning shot with NY (with less than 10 seconds left in the game); twice in 2004-05, four times in 2005-06; once in 2006-07.
Lineups: In his first season as head coach, Thomas used 20 different starting lineups in 2006-07...Most-used lineups were Marbury/Crawford/Curry/Jeffries/Frye (11, 5-6) and Marbury/Francis/Curry/Richardson/Frye (11, 4-7)...A total of six lineups (out of 20) were used only once...Curry led Knicks in starts (81), followed by Marbury (74)...Of the 15 players who saw action for the Knicks in 2006-07, only two failed to make at least one start (Kelvin Cato, Randolph Morris).
Hello, My Name Is...: After using 22, 19 and 19 players over the prior three seasons, Knicks used just 15 players in 2006-07 (lowest total since 13 in 2002-03)...Over the past four seasons, a total of 47 players have seen action in at least one regular season game for the Knicks.
Back To Backs: Knicks played 20 sets of back-to-back games in 2006-07...Knicks swept one set, lost eight and split 11...They were 7-13 in the first games of back-to-backs, 6-14 in the second (total game record of 13-27)...Knicks’ lone sweep of back-to-back games came on Mar. 2-3 (106-97 win over Golden State at MSG; followed by 104-100 OT win at Atlanta). It marked Knicks’ first sweep of back-to-back games since Jan. 10-11, 2006 (at Cleveland/vs. Dallas); as NY had gone 28 sets of back-to-backs (last 14 sets of 2005-06, first 14 sets of 2006-07) without a sweep.
Wire To Wire: Knicks recorded three wire-to-wire wins (never trailed): Dec. 4 vs. Memphis (98-90), Jan. 5 at Seattle (111-93) and Jan. 10 vs. Philadelphia (106-99)...Knicks had 11 wire-to-wire losses (never led).
