2006-07 Knicks Season In Review: Part II

NEW YORK, May 22, 2007 --- The New York Knicks 2006-2007 season was marked with numerous highs and lows, and stories being told both on and off the court. In the second of a two part series, the Knicks take a look at some of the common themes that have defined the past season.

Fifty-Two!: On Jan. 26, Jamal Crawford poured in a career-high and Knicks season-high 52 points (20-30 FGA, career-high 8-10 from Downtown) in win over Miami at MSG...It was Jamal’s second career 50+ scoring game, the 14th 50+ game in Knicks history, and the highest-scoring game for NY since Allan Houston had 53 points at Lakers, Feb. 16, 2003...Jamal nailed 16 consecutive shots over a 22:48 span (first-third quarters), three shy of Johnny Newman’s club record 19 straight (spread over four games in January 1988)...Career-high eight three-pointers fell one shy of Knicks single-game mark (Latrell Sprewell, John Starks).

Forty-Plus: In addition to Crawford’s 52-pointer, Marbury (three times) and Curry (once) authored 40+ scoring games...Marbury scored 41 in 3OT vs. Pistons, Dec. 27; 40 vs. Seattle on Mar. 6 and 43 at Dallas on Mar. 30...Curry scored a career-high 43 points at Milwaukee on Apr. 7.

Thirty-Times-Six: Six different Knicks produced 30+ scoring efforts: Marbury (nine times), Curry (six), Crawford (four), Quentin Richardson (three), Nate Robinson (two) and Channing Frye (one)...It marked the first time since 1978-79 in which the Knicks produced as many as six individual 30+ scorers (Bob McAdoo, Earl Monroe, Spencer Haywood, Mike Glenn, Ray Williams and Toby Knight).

Offensively Speaking: Knicks finished 16th in the NBA in points per game (97.5) and 17th in field goal percentage (.457)...Knicks recorded their highest team scoring average since 1994-95 (98.2) and their highest shooting percentage since 1996-97 (.463)...Knicks were 21-14 when scoring 100+ points...Season-high point total was 151 in 3OT win over Detroit, Dec. 27 (one point shy of all-time team record 152 vs. Syracuse, Dec. 11, 1959)...Season-low point total was 68 in loss at Cleveland, Mar. 23...Knicks shot season-high .563 (49-87) in 3OT win over Pistons, Dec. 27; season-low .345 (29-84) in loss at Clippers, Dec. 31...Knicks were 3-1 when all five starters scored in double figures...Knicks had just one starter in double-figure scoring six times on the season (Curry three times; Marbury, Francis and Frye once each)...Knicks had four 20+ scorers twice, both in wins (Dec. 27 in 3OT vs. Detroit, Jan. 20 at Indiana)...Combined total of 296 points (Knicks 151, Pistons 145) in 3OT game on Dec. 27 marked third-highest combined point total in Knicks history.

Off The Boards: Knicks ranked fifth in the NBA in rebounds per game (43.3), their highest team rebounding average since 1993-94 (45.3)...NY ranked second in the League in offensive boards per game (12.6), trailing only Cleveland (12.7)...Knicks had multiple double-digit rebounders in 21 games this season (two 10+ rebounders 16 times, three 10+ rebounders five times).

Off The Bench: Knicks got key contributions all season from off-the-bench corps, as NY averaged 27.9 points (2,284) off the bench in 2006-07...Three players averaged double-digit scoring off the bench: Quentin Richardson (18.0), Jamal Crawford (12.7) and David Lee (10.2, along with 10.0 rebounds off the bench)...Knicks had 11 20+ scoring efforts off the bench (Crawford five, Robinson four, Francis and Lee one each)...On Nov. 18, Crawford scored 37 points off the bench vs. Boston, the Knicks’ highest-scoring off-the-bench effort since Bob McAdoo scored 41 off the bench vs. Atlanta on Dec. 17, 1978 (highest recorded off-the-bench game in NY history).

Defense: Knicks finished 20th in the NBA in points allowed (100.3), and 17th in opposition field goal percentage (.460)...Knicks were 9-35 when allowing 100 or more points...Knicks allowed a season-high 145 points in 3OT win over Pistons, Dec. 27; season-low 74 points in Mar. 18 win over Toronto...Allowed season-high .600 shooting (48-80) in loss at Golden State, Feb. 14; season-low .315 shooting (23-73) in win over Washington, Nov. 15.

From The Line: Knicks finished 27th in NBA with a .715 free throw percentage (1,714-2,396)...Knicks recorded their lowest percentage (.715) since 1985-86 (.686)...Knicks ranked seventh in the NBA in total free throws made (1,714) and sixth in total attempts (2,396)...Three Knicks authored streaks of 20+: Francis twice (20 from Nov. 4-18, 27 from Nov. 22-28), Marbury (20 from Jan. 5-12) and Crawford (Knicks season high 28 straight from Dec. 13-23)...Knicks went 48-63 in 3OT win over Detroit, Dec. 27, establishing club marks at present MSG for both makes and attempts.

Threeeeee-Point Goal: Knicks finished 23rd in the NBA in three-point shooting (.346 on 474-1,370)...Knicks recorded their lowest percentage since 1997-98 (.335), but notched their highest made total (474) since 2002-03 (club record 606)...Marbury (123) and Crawford (103) had 100+ home run seasons...Knicks recorded at least one three-pointers in each game this season, and nailed a season-high 12 (of 27) three-pointers on Mar. 22 in loss to Blazers...Knicks recorded four, four-point plays this season (3PT FGM+FTM): three by Crawford and one by Francis...Crawford’s seven career four-masters as a Knick trail only John Starks (10) on all-time club list.

Comebacks: Knicks won seven games in which they trailed by double figures...Biggest comeback to win was in 2OT win over Charlotte, Dec. 20 (111-109; Lee tip-in), in which they trailed by as many as 19 points (43-62 in second quarter)...NY squandered a double-figure lead in a loss 10 times. Biggest blown lead in loss was in 92-90 loss to Hornets, Mar. 16, in which NY led by as many as 18 points (43-25 in second quarter).

Overtime: Knicks were 6-2 in overtime, and were one of only three NBA teams with as many as six OT wins in 2006-07 (Hornets were spotless 7-0 in OT, Timberwolves were 6-4)...Six OT wins were one shy of Knicks club mark (seven on three occasions, most recently in 1990-91)...Knicks played three multiple-OT games in ‘06-07 - all within the season’s first 31 contests - and won all three: Nov. 1 on Opening Night at Memphis (118-117, 3OT), Dec. 20 vs. Charlotte (111-109, 2OT on Lee tip-in) and Dec. 27 vs. Detroit (151-145, 3OT)...Triple-OT win over Pistons on Dec. 27 was just the second triple-OT game at the present MSG, but the second within the calendar year (140-133 win over Phoenix in 3OT on Jan. 2, 2006)...In a span that stretches into the 2003-04 season, Knicks have won 17 of their last 25 overtime games.

Margins: Knicks were 10-10 in games decided by three points or less, 10-23 in games decided by 10 points or more, and 4-6 in games decided by 20 points or more...Season’s biggest winning margin was 24 points, twice (100-76 at Miami, Nov. 17; 101-77 at Boston, Nov. 24)...Biggest losing margin was 29 points (69-98 at Chicago, Apr. 10)...Knicks held a 20+ point lead in nine games this season (won all nine); trailed by 20+ points in 18 games (lost all 18).

Injuries: Knicks recorded 179 manpower games lost due to injury (12th-highest figure in NBA)...Injuries to key players cut deeply into team’s post-season aspirations: Crawford played just one game after being diagnosed with stress fractured right ankle on Feb. 27...Lee missed 23 of season’s last 26 games due to injured right leg...Ankle and knee injuries caused Francis to miss 38 games...Marbury missed eight games, including season’s last seven contests due to sprained right great toe...Richardson was sidelined for a total of 33 games, and did not play after Mar. 14 (back)...In early part of season, Frye missed 10 games due to sprained left ankle, while Jeffries was sidelined for campaign’s first 22 games (wrist)...In all, 12 different players missed at least one game due to injury/illness...Knicks used the second-year Inactive List 178 times (14 different players, all except Malik Rose) this season.

Vegas, Baby!: At NBA All-Star 2007 at Las Vegas, David Lee earned MVP honors in the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge with game-high 30 points on a perfect shooting night (14-14 FGA, 2-2 FTA), adding game-high 11 rebounds in pacing Sophomore squad to 155-114 win...Defending champion Nate Robinson finished second to Boston’s Gerald Green in Sprite Slam Dunk competition...The Knicks did not have a player on Eastern Conference All-Star squad...Knicks legend Richie Guerin was a named one of 15 finalists for induction with the Class for 2007 by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, although he ultimately fell short of election announced on Apr. 2.

Attendance: Knicks ranked eighth in the NBA in average home attendance (41 dates, 18,805) for the 2006-07 regular season...With a total attendance figure of 771,017, Knicks played to 95.2% capacity at Madison Square Garden...After selling out just five of their first 21 home dates, Knicks sold out 17 of their last 20 home games for a total of 22 sellouts at MSG.

Absent Friends: Knicks mourned the passings of pioneer executive Alvin Cooperman (on Aug. 11, 2006), former player Charlie Tyra (Dec. 29, 2006), legendary broadcaster Jim Karvellas (Jan. 1, 2007) and longtime stats crew member Melvyn “Bootsie” Dunn (Apr. 23, 2007).
