Knicks guard Stephon Marbury was at The Garden on Friday to tape an extended interview with MSG's Gus Johnson. The two talked about a wide range of topics, and Marbury even answered questions submitted online at MSG.com and NYKnicks.com.
Prior to his chat with Johnson, Marbury sat down with NYKnicks.com for this exclusive interview:
Question: How does the acquisition of Zach Randolph complement your skills?
Marbury: Well, it complements me, because now we've got two guys that we can throw the ball down low in the post to. We will have more open shots, and whenever you have a wide-open shot as an NBA player, 75 percent of the time the odds are in your favor.
Question: You are obviously one of the leaders on this team. How do you think you are going to be able to help the team to adjust with both Zach and Eddy Curry together up front?
Marbury: I don't think there will be as big an adjustment as people are making it out to be. Those two guys aren't point guards where they have to run plays. They have to run from end to end, post-up, set picks, score the basketball, rebound and block shots.
Question: Did you watch the NBA Summer League at all?
Marbury: Yeah, I watched.
Question: What did you think of how the guys played?
Marbury: I was really happy about them going undefeated. It is a great sign of what's to come.
Question: What can the fans expect from the 2007-08 New York Knicks?
Marbury: Expect a different team from last year. The difference is we are a better team.
Question: What have you been doing to work out over the summer?
Marbury: I've been doing my regular routine. I'm working hard and sticking with my program that I've used the last seven or eight years. I've been shooting the basketball.
Question: How is your health?
Marbury: It's great! I feel fine. I mean, I still have some aches and pains, but that's the NBA. I'm 30 years old, but people don't associate me with being 30 with 12 years in the NBA. So with myself, it's not only 12 years in the NBA, but I've played a lot of minutes over my career, so it's a lot of basketball.
Question: Have you been keeping in contact with the guys over the summer?
Marbury: Yeah. I've talked to Jamal (Crawford) a lot.
Question: How does he feel?
Marbury: Jamal says he feels real good.
Question: Your Starbury Give Back Day at Coney Island was really successful.
Marbury: Yeah, we're doing it again on August 21 here in Manhattan. It will probably be at Manhattan Mall, if we can't do it there we might do it in front of the Garden.
Question: What gave you the idea to do it?
Marbury: I like to do things different. I don't like to do the same things that everyone else does. The only way to make a difference is by being different.
Question: If an NBA player had been doing something like this when you were growing up, how would that have affected you?
Marbury: Oh man, that would have meant a lot to me. The person that would have been doing it, forget about the basketball, I would have respected him as a person. Just to have the peace of mind to do it. Even with myself, I'm just happy that I have the peace of mind to go and do something like that because it gives people an opportunity to have something. That is why I am so happy right now.
