NEW YORK, May 29 – New York Knickerbockers President and General Manager Scott Layden announced today that Brendan Malone has been hired as an assistant coach and Michael Malone has been promoted to assistant coach/advance scout.

Brendan Malone returns to the Knicks for his third tenure on New York’s bench and next to Head Coach Don Chaney for the second time in his career. The 17-year NBA coaching veteran, who had been with the Indiana Pacers for the past three seasons, worked on the Knicks’ bench from 1986-87 through 1987-88, and again from 1996-97 through 1999-2000. He had also spent seven years as an assistant with the Pistons, including their back-to-back NBA Championship seasons in 1989 and 1990, and was a member of Don Chaney’s staff in Detroit from 1993-94 through 1994-95. In 1995-96, the senior Malone led the expansion Toronto Raptors to a 21-61 record as their head coach.

“The return of Brendan Malone is a great addition to Coach Chaney’s staff, “ Layden said. “He is one of the most experienced bench coaches in the league, and his vast basketball knowledge will be invaluable to our organization.”

“Brendan is a veteran assistant coach with NBA Championship credentials,” Chaney said. “The experience he brings to the table has made his return to the Knicks an exciting addition.”

Michael Malone, Brendan’s son, has been promoted to assistant coach/advance scout after two seasons as the club’s coaching associate. Moving from behind the bench, Malone will now be on the road observing and scouting the team’s opponents on a daily basis.

“As a coaching associate, Michael has shown us that his hard work and determination to make a name for himself in this organization is his main focus,” Layden said. “He has impressed us in many ways showing that he has a bright future in the NBA.”
