With 5:15 to go in the first quarter, as the greatest center in Knicks history was descending the Garden steps to take his seat courtside between his Dad and Dream Team-mate Michael Jordan, the packed-to-the-rafters house began to chant. "P-a-a-at-t-tri-i-i-ck E-e-e-wi-i-ing!!! Pa-a-a-tr-i-i-ck E-e-e-wi-i-ingggg!"

Patrick Knew it Was Time

Sept 17, 2002 -- Patrick Ewing knew, better than anyone. He knew how much harder it had gotten, over the past few years, to summon up the will and strength that had marked a decade-and-a-half as one of the game’s greatest. He knew how the league he once dominated had gotten faster, sleeker, bigger, and above all, younger. He knew how pain had become his constant partner now. He acknowledged it this day even before he said a word, insisting on sitting rather than standing, deferring to an aching back.


Ewing's Number to be Retired
Dec 24, 2002 -- The New York Knickerbockers announced that they will retire jersey No. 33 in honor of Knicks great Patrick Ewing at halftime of New York's game versus the Orlando Magic on Friday, Feb. 28, 2003.
