Knicks Select Chandler With 23rd Pick in 2007 NBA Draft
• EXCLUSIVE: Isiah Thomas Reflects on the Draft
NEW YORK, June 28, 2007 -- It was a night to remember for the New York Knicks on Thursday, as the team came away from the event with a net gain of three players, including a pair of draftees. With the 23rd pick in the first round , the Knicks chose DePaul forward Wilson Chandler. While the choice of Chandler enabled the Knicks to get the player they wanted at No. 23, it shared the spotlight with another big move -- a six-player deal that saw the Knicks land Zach Randolph, Fred Jones, Dan Dickau and second-round pick Demetris Nichols from the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Steve Francis, Channing Frye and a future second-round pick. Chandler, a 20-year-old who averaged 14.6 points per game as a sophomore last season, was Second Team All-Big East selection as a sophomore and posted eight double-doubles with five games of 20 or more points. Scouts describe him as having exceptional leaping ability, and he is known for his skill as a rebounder and defender. The 6-foot-8, 230 pounds native of Benton Harbor, Mich., got his college career off to a fast start in 2005-06, scoring 10.6 points per game and earning two selections as the Big East Rookie of the Week. He also posted a career-high 26 points against Seton Hall that season, a mark he later tied against Hofstra in the opening round of the postseason NIT tournament. The Knicks made their pick just over two hours after the draft began with Portland selecting Ohio State center Greg Oden No. 1 overall. Oden was followed by Seattle's selection of Texas forward Kevin Durant, the freshman phenom who won both the Naismith and Wooden Awards. Here is a look at the first-round picks leading up to the Knicks' selection of Chandler.
