Transcript of Wilson Chandler’s Remarks to the Media

NEW YORK, June 28, 2007 -- Following his selection by the New York Knicks with the 23rd pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Wilson Chandler met with members of the local media. Here is a transcript of that conversation:

Question: As far as anyone has heard, you hadn't worked out for the Knicks or a lot of teams. Did you have a sense they were interested in you? When did you know it might be your destination?

Chandler: I didn't know if it was going to be a definite destination, but I knew they talked to my agent a few times and they had interest. I just stayed confident in my agent because I didn't know what would happen because of my injury. But I stayed confident, and it was a dream to be in New York. It didn't matter if it was the first or second round, I just wanted to come, and it is a great opportunity.

Question: Do you think you will be ready to contribute next season?

Chandler: I am ready to compete on the next level. I am willing to work harder and am ready to do whatever the team needs me to do. I am going to work hard on my game, and we will see what happens.

Question: Did the Knicks make you a guarantee that you would not fall past them at 23?

Answer: No, but I heard the rumors like everyone else heard the rumors. I knew they had interest in me, but I didn't know what would happen because of the injury. I hurt myself in the workouts in Atlanta before I could workout for any teams.

Question: Who do you model your game after?

Chandler:: I don't try to model it after anyone. I just try to play hard. But I have heard people [say] Tayshaun Prince, I've heard Scottie Pippen and I've heard Allan Houston. I think I have great comparisons to all of them and I'm just preparing to work hard.

Question: What is the biggest thing you need to improve on for this level?

Chandler: There are a few things. Shooting, ball-handling, strength. But I am willing to work as hard as I can to be ready for this season. I always work hard in practice and hustle and try to be a team player.

Question: Wilson, can you talk about the reaction from the fans when they called your name.

Chandler: Man, it was a wonderful thing. It doesn't happen a lot when fans chant for you like that. It was a beautiful thing, and I was very happy.

Question: Your coach said something about you having great feet in terms of lateral movement. Do you think you can be a strong defensive player in this league?

Chandler: I feel like I can. Whatever the coach wants me to do, I try hard. Play D, rebound, play offense. Whatever my coach needs, I try hard and give him what he needs.

Question: How well do you know Quentin Richardson?

Chandler: I don't know him very well, but I have met him a few times. He is a very good guy, and I have watched him play basketball and he is a very, very good basketball player. It will be a great opportunity to play with him and be around him.

Question: Do you have any relationship with Mark Aguirre?

Chandler: I met him before, but right now I don't, but I am pretty sure I will since he is a DePaul Alumni, and a legend. I am looking forward to him taking me under his wing.
