“(Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski) has taken a lot of their concepts - you know, running to the corner, dribble handoffs, ball screens and different stuff that,” Henderson said. “Coach (K) has taken that and put it in our system, so I’m pretty familiar with a lot of things they do here.”
Coach K and D’Antoni coached together with USA Basketball over the past two summers and both have shared their insights on the game with each other. Henderson said he could see the similarities in their offensive philosophies during his workout with the Knicks, which he said was different than any of his other NBA workouts so far.
“This one compared to the others had a lot more shooting,” Henderson said. “They wanted to see how you shot within their system, so they put us through different drills that were like game shots.”
Henderson, a two-year starter with the Blue Devils, is an athletic guard with a versatile offensive game and good defensive fundamentals. The Wooden Award All-American posted career highs with 16.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists last season.
Henderson feels he could have similar success in New York under D’Antoni as he did at Duke, but feels his biggest strengths would be on the defensive end.
“I think, first and foremost, just defensively being able to guard and bring a defensive toughness to the team,” he said.
Henderson, who is projected as a lottery to mid-first-round pick, has not hired an agent to protect his college eligibility. He has already worked out for several NBA teams and plans to visit several more cities before the June 25 draft.
“It’s been a grind,” he said.
While he admits all the teams he’s worked out for have shown interest, it’s difficult to get too much feedback from teams this early in the process. But if he has it his way, New York would be the ideal location.
“It’d be great. I was talking to my family about it. I’m close to New York - I’m from Philly - and they could come see me play all the time,” Henderson said. “Having a great basketball city with a good team and coaches with a great system, I think I’d work really well here.”
