New York Celebrates Knicks Poetry Scholars Program

The Knicks Poetry Scholars Program enhances the lives on many students apart of the Urban Word NYC nonprofit organization through various workshops and boot camp sessions to provide more guidance for the college application process. Six special High School Seniors are awarded full four-year scholarships through the program by completing various steps including applying to the university of their choice, write a captivating essay entitled “Reason I Write” and submit their resume and portfolio of poems to complete the application. More than 100 students applied, but only six were chosen. On April 17th, the six winners were awarded and recognized in front of the University Partners, members of the Knicks and Urban Word Organizations as well as the entire crowd of Madison Square Garden. Prior to the game, a reception was held in the Madison Square Garden Transformation Center inviting the winners, College Representatives, Urban Word alum, Knicks Staff and Special guest Earl “The Peal” Monroe. The intimate reception highlighted the 10th year of the Knicks Poetry Program, the success of its Alum, special presentations from Carvans Lissaint, Justin Long and Jamila Lyiscott all of whom were recipients of either a full four-year scholarship, prize money from the spoken word final or both in the case of Justin Long who now attends Adelphi University. Earl Monroe spoke of his experience with the program and the magnitude in which it has progressed. Ten years prior, the Knicks Poetry program began in a small book store in New York where Earl was present to witness the young talent of this city. Now, years later, the Knicks Organization, Urban Word NYC and the six Universities, Adelphi University, St. John’s University, Syracuse University, Mercy College and University of Wisconsin are awarding full scholarships for students to invest in their higher education. With the Executive Director of Urban Word, Michael Cirelli, Earl Monroe and the respective College representatives, each student was recognized for their hard work and effort as well as a full four year scholarship to the University of their choice. Afterwards all guests attended pre-game shoot around, received on court photos with Larry Johnson and John Starks and enjoyed the game from a catered suite. The Winners and the college representatives were recognized on court during the 1st timeout of the 3rd quarter in front of a sold out Madison Square Garden arena; what an experience. PHOTO GALLERY
