Signing Contract a "Fields" Day for New Knick

Two months after the Knicks took Landry Fields with the 38th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, the athletic forward out of Stanford signed his first professional contract with the Knicks on Thursday.

“It feels awesome, man,” said Fields as he watched the New York Liberty playoff game alongside teammate Wilson Chandler at Madison Square Garden. “It feels good to be here in New York.”

And New York is happy to have Fields, especially after watching his impressive performance in the NBA Summer League last month in Las Vegas, where he averaged a team-high 15.6 points and 4.8 rebounds in five games.

“Playing in Summer League was always something I wanted to do,” Fields said. “I just played the best I could in front of our fans. I really didn’t do anything differently than what I’ve been doing my whole career at Stanford and even before that.”

That has to be a good sign. If Fields can carry over his intensity from the summer to the preseason and regular season, especially on the defensive end of the floor, he could have a chance of breaking into Coach Mike D’Antoni’s tight rotation.

“Hopefully I fit in well,” said Fields, who was eighth in the nation in scoring last season with 22.0 points per game for Stanford. “If I play like I did in Summer League, I think I’ll be good.”

Fields is already getting to know his new teammates, having worked out with just about everyone from Amar’e Stoudemire to Toney Douglas this summer.

“Every time I’m out here I work out every day,” Fields said. “It’s been a great process.”

Fields has been going back and forth from his hometown of Los Angeles and New York all summer. He plans on returning to L.A. in the upcoming days before coming back to New York for good in the first week of September to continue working out at the team’s training center.

“It’s been kind of crazy but doable,” Landry said with a smile.
