April 7, 2010: Knicks legends John Starks, Walt Frazier and Bernard King were on hand to watch some of New York City’s best ballers compete in the championship rounds of the “MARCH TO THE GARDEN” 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament at Madison Square Garden on April 6.

The top eight teams remaining from an original field of 184 competitors from both the “open” and “40-and-over” divisions had the unique opportunity to play at the Mecca of Basketball following their success in the opening rounds, which were played at the event partner location of the Chelsea Piers Sports Center Pier 60 on March 18.

“It’s like a dream come true,” said Frazier while watching the action from the sideline. “Guys dream about playing at the Garden. Now, they get their big chance.”

The participants certainly took advantage of their opportunity, especially Dee Moore of Team RLD, who knocked down the biggest shot of the day on an NBA-range 3-pointee to give his squad a 21-18 victory over Team JS in the open championship game.

"It was the moment I've been preparing for a long time," said Morris, an entertainer and actor from New York City. "I'm just thankful for the moment. My teammates trusted me and I was fortunate to be able to come through in the clutch for the guys."

The 40-and-over championship went to Lakeland Storm, who defeated 40 Oz. 21-15 in the finals.

“It felt good,” said Keith Amerson, a former guard at Kansas State. “We won it last year and kind of felt we had to come back and repeat. Today, the guys played well and that’s exactly what we did.”

The day consisted of a total of six games for 32 participants. In the open division semifinals, Team RLD posted a 21-13 victory over Wesley Paul 2 while Team JS coasted to a 21-10 win over Wesley Paul 3. Lakeland Storm edged Old Gold 21-15 and 40 Oz. beat Elite Access 21-5 in the 40-and-over semis.

The games had 20-minute limits or could be decided by the first team to reach 21 points.

“There were some good players, man,” Frazier said. “The younger players, a lot of them could jump and they had good team-work ethic. I think team work here was essential to be successful, and they were very aware of that. They did a good job.”

Frazier and King, who coached the teams, handed out trophies after the tournament. The two winning squads will be honored in front of 20,000 Knicks fans during a game at The Garden next season while enjoying fully catered luxury suites with their friends and families. Winning teams also will receive complimentary memberships to the Chelsea Piers Sports Center and be given the opportunity to continue their basketball participation on complimentary teams in the New York Corporate Athletic League summer division.
